Seems the case with this tour, and is perhaps thus with how audiences receive RM concerts. - On the one hand the casual dancy kind likes the comfort of well-known hits, while on the other hand exists the well-listened fan who loves the breath of canon being presented this time around. How nice it is to belong to this latter hand; Viva Roxy Music! I believe RM/BF should give us the kind of tour they wish to perform - shred to the detractors for they know not of which they fault. Happy Trails. My God what has happened to the place - absolutely spiffing. I took my son and daughter ('veterans' of quite a few roxy/ferry shows) and a couple of friends as guests so was quite nervous as the show got underway. But nothing to worry about - Roxy were simply superb tonight. I'm a veteran of '72 so know a good roxy show when I see one. They were on great form and all really enjoyed it. Star of the show by a country mile was Andy - absolutely magnificent. The sound and set-list was great - bass and drums quite low in the mix though interestingly as my son pointed out. Loved the female saxophonist who shadowed Andy - great. The Birmingham audience was very appreciative - no sign of any moaning minnies. Compared to the musicianship of the 70's, Roxy are now in a different dimension. Phil was note perfect tonight - not as flamboyant as I expected - but played well within himself. Have to say in the 70's he often fluffed his lines but is now a master of his craft. As is Andy. I simply cannot wait to do it all over again on Wednesday - accompanied by a real roxy siren . If you have tickets for future shows, relax, you're in for a fantastic night. The only sound issue for me (from about 30 rows back) was Ferry's vocals, all of which had the dry, top-end sound of the first album, rather like a telephone line. Everything else, backing vocals, sax sound etc. quite full. Ferry's voice was, however, very clear. I thought the audience were quite accommodating, given that an hour elapsed between hits, and some of the stuff we like so much is quite complex. By Sentimental Fool (well played) I felt the crowd were becoming 'polite' rather than 'mystified-yet-enthusiastic.' But everyone perked up with 'Same Old Scene' and the audience were back with our heroes. I'm a bit perplexed by Ferry's disappearance for what seems like half the gig behind the piano (at either end of the stage). 'My Only Love' - well, okay, because he plays a good piano solo, but 'Avalon?' I would suspect that a very large percentage of the audience would be fairly hacked off at not even being able to see the frontman, particularly since the onstage feed from the cameras was pretty much secondary to the (albeit clever and sympathetic) graphics. Let me tell you - as an Andy Mackay fan, particularly if I was at the back of the hall, what I wouldn't want to see on the screen is the (admittedly lovely) lass from 'Don't Stop The Dance' pretending to play sax when the Emperor Himself is blowing. On that subject, it was fairly boggling for me to see another sax player onstage, but it was actually okay. I suppose it was only a matter of time, what with Manzo (whose big birthday it was) sharing stage with endless extra guitarists: Ferry using three backing singers to cope with 'Sentimental Fool' when in his heyday he managed to mangle the opening 'Shirley you cannot . . .' all by himself. :) But, oh my sax fancying brothers and sisters, what no-one has so-far revealed (Spoiler Alert) is that The Big Mac has bought himself a new toy - a curved soprano! And he didn't even trade-in the straight version! Both used - wealth beyond the dreams of avarice . . . Seriously good playing of difficult material, managing to pull off a gig enjoyed by Both Ends of the Roxy audience. Oh - just realised - no encore as such and no LST . . . Great playlist, iffy sound, and I still can't get a grip on the performances themselves. I've heard one bootlegged performance of "Sentimental Fool" (from 1976) and thought Ferry sounded Godawful. The notion of him reprising the song 35 years later is mind-boggling. Ditto "Same Old Scene," which like "More Than This" was/is way out of Ferry's vocal range as a live piece. And yet the random songs that the band has rolled out this tour are amazing! "2 HB"? "To Turn You On"? "Amazona"? Jesus, even if our man is croaking like a frog on those numbers, what a moment that must be live! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2011 09:14:22 +0000 From: Tracy Connell Subject: RE: [AVALON] Still after ticket for o2 London:) Yes if I want to sit in Scotland to watch the show or pay #300. > CC: avalon@smoe.org > From: richarde66@mac.com > Subject: Re: [AVALON] Still after ticket for o2 London:) > Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2011 18:22:11 +0000 > To: tracyep@hotmail.com > > I think there are still some for sale > > R ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2011 07:45:52 -0500 From: leesullivanart@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: NEC LG Arena - -----Original Message----- From: leesullivanart@aol.com To: avalon@smoe.org Sent: Tue, Feb 1, 2011 11:26 am Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: NEC LG Arena You know I couldn't fit into that dress any more. - -----Original Message----- From: johnobrien001@aol.com To: leesullivanart@aol.com; avalon@smoe.org Sent: Tue, Feb 1, 2011 11:11 am Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: NEC LG Arena From Lee Sullivan: " The only sound issue for me (from about 30 rows back)" So that wasn't you in drag on second sax?
