I liked it, but preferred Tom Thumbs and one or two others. Years pass and, of course, this haunting ballad has indeed become the strongest, nay magical, cut from that curiously unsatisfying album. So when I streamed Olympia for the first time, in that drunken hour of first love, (and, yes, this bejewelled album is worthy of such intoxication,) I was intrigued to read Avaloniabs second greatest Scot championing Reason Or Rhyme as the bone.b Once again I thought I got it but was drawn more to the riffed-up Alphaville, the melodies of Tender and Song For The Siren, and the groove (armada) of the dance tracks. (Obviously loathing Heartache and living in hourly fear that a breakfast presenter will tell us itbs the new single.) I even thought the middle section of ROR fell into the overproduced Bete Noire era. Oh how wrong could I be!! The top-line melody is incredible, the lyrics sublime. At 5.20 when he breathlessly warbles bThe sun and moon and all of the stars, they bow down to you whenever you pass,b .. my heart pumps as I type. His voice buried deep within the guitar layers, his words whispered sweetly from a poetbs grave. Bravo Reecey, Viva Bryan. Ibll get my hat. Martino b& PS When I asked him to inscribe Viva Martino inside the deluxe and delightful edition at Selfridges he squinted up at me bMartina? Nice name ..b - knowing that staying cool remains the main rule I semi-blurted Martino with an O b& er, for me b& oh how we laughed b& ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2010 23:50:53 +0100 (BST) From: Johnny Reece Subject: Re: [AVALON] Reason or rhyme Second greatest Scot ? You're asking for a slap. Miss Martina-Oh ! Having lived with Olympia for a couple of weeks, I was hoping the real thing struck me more than a sub-standard sound quality stream (nice though it was in the absence of anything else) and a few dodgy shaky mp3s. It has, for the most part. The strong grew stronger, as the weak, got weaker. Even the booklet on the almost-LP-sized edition fools me into thinking I have a Roxy type cover beside me. I was reminded I was talking 'like the old days' the other day - or was that just because I'm 'old' ? I actually described to a friend how I preferred 'Side 2' to 'Side 1'. I really said that. Old habits die hard. Ups and downs. I still love You Can Dance, but I struggle hopelessly with Heartache. I skip it now. One Night isn't played - at all. It's awful. The runt of the litter. Song To The Siren is growing, creeping up on me. Tender is growing, as is Me Oh My. But my first impression remains the same - Reason Or Rhyme, an absolute jewel. It trundles on, on, on, hypnotically. I keep going back to it. That track has Roxy stamped all over it, for me. No, I don't know (or care, frankly) who plays various parts of it - it's just the sound. Like a lounged up Bogus Man - the trundling instrumental sequence I mean. Less darkly mysterious, but hypnotising. Remade, remodelled, 37 years on. It's that 'hypnotic' part that gets me, every time, be it Bryan or Roxy, a-la Boys And Girls, a-la Windswept, a-la Sentimental Fool, a-la Stronger Through The Years. Headphones very loud. It's the only way. But ROR is the only track that hints at Roxy, in my opinion. This is very much a Bryan Ferry album, and I can't believe for a second that a Roxy album would sound like Olympia. But that's fine by me. The rest though, will take a bit of time. By chance or design. A Sentimental (Scots) Fool. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V14 #156 ***************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
