I'd add that the M&S adds were well shot and raised his profile at the time. His association - misplaced - with Nazi iconography and, perhaps less misplaced, with Country pressure groups were / are far more damaging. I know I'm alone in these pages as finding his start-rite ads charming and totally on brand. As for the Mandarin hotel ads .. Is that the vid on YouTube where he positions himself within a picture frame. That's cool too. Finally Jocelyn's observation about the confessional tone and less abstract nature of the new lyrics is accurate. Not just BF bass - which is an extraordinary lyrical departure - but many others. Many references to his protracted marriage dissolution and, a reasonable conjecture, the tempestuous time with Katie. When a brief comes in with the job to plug 'style' it's a copywriting/ art directional dream to get Ferry on board, I know the AD on that job was a huge fan. Once upon a time there were two hopes of that happening, no hope and Bob Hope, but this, as they say, is another day. Or perhaps that they wanted too much money for it? Or is there some other reason? It seems remarkable that the Twix advertisers were so "stuck (thanks Ivor!)" on LST to do a karaoke version. I know we have some "advertising types" on Avalon, perhaps they could shed some light on what may have happened? It put him in a different light as it seemed it was out of character and out of the normal environment you associate with him. There was a nice sense of humour about it. You're right when you say "this is another day": I get the impression Ferry is less descerning now and I think appears more frequently in the press, whereas the Start Rite campaign was in the mid to late 90s? > From: Jocelynfiske@aol.com > Date: Wed, 6 Oct 2010 20:47:11 -0400 > Subject: Re: [AVALON] Twix & Heart Attack in Numbers > To: victor_hasting@yahoo.com; avalon@smoe.org > > Ferry has said that the corporate gigs pay for the studio.
