I had always wondered about them (the two songs are from pretty deep into the American Folk Tradition; not something you would find casually). It turns out that the year that Nick Cave curated the Meltdown Festival (2000? 2001?) there was a star-studded tribute concert to Harry Smith and the "Anthology of American Folk Music". The show featured the likes of Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, Eliza Carthy, Richard Thompson, and Bryan Ferry. There was also a parallel show in New York, and one in LA. These featured EmmyLou Harris, The Maggarigles, Rufus Wainwright, John Sebastian, Philip Glass, Beth Orton and David Johanson. All of this is featured on a documentary called "The Old Weird America." For those of you unfamilair with the dreaded "Anthology" and its import to the history of Rock Music, contact me offline. Or look it up in Wikipedia. One thing though. Bryan Ferry is Even Cooler in my mind today for having been a part of this project. - --Andrew in Chicago <> ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V14 #114 ***************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
