Bring it on, I say! Studio engineers worn to a frazzle by endless mix sessions, close friends of the band with itchy fingers, Ferry gophers with a grudge, flavour-of-the-week bands recording in the next studio who found a CDR lying around on the pool table, hunt saboteurs working undercover as tape ops, this is your time to shine! I jest, of course. Bootlegging unreleased tapes would be a disgrace. And you run the risk of having everyone here moaning about Ferry using old backing tracks on his 2015 album of out-takes and cover-versions! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Dec 2009 10:40:27 -0500 From: ameyersld@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Devendra Banhart Hey All! Sorry to interrupt the bickering, but I have a curious bit of news for you all. Devendra Banhart, noted Freak-Folk singer, has put out a song called "16th and Valencia Roxy Music." Now, I have never really liked Devendra Banhart. Too self-obsessed, too whiny, too much resemblance to Mike Myers in "The Love Guru." But this is a great song. It sounds like he's been listening to "Country Life" and "Stranded". (Plus, it doesn't sound like Devendra Banhart!) Usually, when an artist has been listening to Roxy Music, they end up imitating the less endearing features of the Mr Ferry's vocals. But DB seems to have been channeling Mssr's Manzanera and Thompson. Check it out. I also imagine that most of the great bootlegs that were going to surface have already surfaced - there's only so much old stuff lying around! In lieu of all that, wouldn't it be cool if artists from all over the world were to take the sacred Roxy originals and record covers of them while putting their own fresh and unique slant on the tracks? And for that matter, why not throw in some covers of Ferry/Eno/Mackay/Manzanera's solo work, as well? Oh, wait - that's already happened! :) Shameless though it may be, I would be remiss if I didn't put in a Christmastime plug for "Take Refuge In Pleasure: The Songs of Roxy Music Revisited." I still have several boxes of CDs left, but when they are gone, they are gone, as we will not be printing any more. Bryan Ferry has a copy, and one is on its way to Andy Mackay. There is a 3-star review of "Take Refuge In Pleasure" in the current issue of Record Collector - I was pleased to see that. In the absence of a new Roxy album, "Take Refuge In Pleasure' would make a nice Christmas or Hanukkah gift for the Roxy fan on your list - I know I would want one if I didn't have boxes of them in my living room... :) You can get the record at www.burningskyrecords.com. Cheers, and Happy Holidays!
