I finished a long summer vacation a couple of weeks ago. When I came home, I found that Manzanera.com finally had released the double 801 live cd. I ordered it right away and received it a few days ago. I have listened several times to both the original, expanded, complete show from The Queen Elisabeth Hall on 3.September 1976 and also the bonus cd with the final run-through of the set recorded 3 days before their first warm-up-gig at Cromer on 26.Aug.1976. The album is called " 801 Live collectors edition", but they might as well have called it THE ULTIMATE EDITION. This is really a wonderful release. The album sleeve is actually a book, and it is really shaped as a hard-cover book. It contains 60 pages of info, pictures, memos and just about everything you could possibly want. Here you get the story of the band, their initial plans, how they picked the name 801, details about rehearsal, personell et cetera. There are also plenty of previously unseen pictures. On the backside cover the 2 cds can be found. The original QEH concert sounds like a dream. The production is wonderful, and all the instruments can be heard unbelievably clear. And there is so much going on on stage. I sometimes wonder if there are 10-12 people up there instead of 6. Third uncle and Sombre reptiles are now complete, but there were no surprises in the previously unheard seconds. What really makes this worth the price is of course the bonus cd. Bill MacCormick luckily recorded this rehearsal ( plus another one and the Cromer gig, which is lost). Thanks BILL ! This must have been the final rehearsal before their debut-gig. There is no information whether this is a microphone or a soundboard recording. It can of course not be compared to the High End QEH-recording. Nevertheless it is of surprisingly high quality considering the circumstances. ....and what a gem it is. It shows an extremely well-rehearsed band, and they sound so relaxed and cool. You can even hear cheerful shouting between the members from time to time. The band is in full control, and this is can be heard especially on "The fat lady of Limbourg" and "Diamond Head". "TFLOL" is the biggest surprise on the cd. It starts with an almost 4 minutes long improvisation, which brings my thoughts back to a mixture of Roxy's "Sentimental Fool"-intro and the kind of improvisations King Crimson performed in the early 70's. Really cool! On "Diamond Head" Phil plays some awasome guitar, especially towards the end comes a never-before-heard version of his solo. This wonderful double-cd-book should be a MUST for all Roxy and Manzanera fans, and ALL the money goes to the band !!! Cheers Ole ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 2009 12:08:06 -0400 From: jencohn201@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Mermaid O'Brien Brilliant!
