That was in the mid to late 80's (I found it in a clearance bin, of all places). Then I went on to buy all their albums. Even more horrifying to some, I got hooked on Bryan Ferry after hearing "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" from the Legend soundtrack. I'm not sure what my point was, but those greatest hits compilations can be a gateway drug. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2009 07:28:57 -0400 From: Alan Heaton Subject: Re: [AVALON] Compilation - New Album I actually LOVED "Is Your Love Strong Enough"! I remember sitting through "Legend" when it initially came out largely just to hear the track, and was disappointed that it was relegated to accompanying the closing credits (not realizing then that that was a plum spot for song placement). That was the one Ferry song I was hoping that someone would cover on "Take Refuge In Pleasure: The Songs of Roxy Music Revisited." I believe that same Roxy Music's Greatest Hits (belonging to a college roommate) was MY Roxy "gateway drug" (great term, that!), as well. On the Bete Noire show proper, the 5.1 mix was not all that hot. Also, the video quality was strictly VHS ported over...it didn't look (to me) any better than my old tape. Certainly no remastering! To me the main benefit of getting this was to have a clean, nearly permanent form of the concert to replace my aging VHS. Also, the sound, though not impressive 5.1-wise, lacks the burring defect that plagued the American release of the VHS. So the DVD is worth buying for that reason alone, if you have no version other than the American VHS. As far as the 2002 bonus concert included, the picture quality was very good, sound was clean but not much of a surround effect, so an improvement there. However, the performance was very weak, embarrassing actually. It's been several months since I got and watched this DVD, and I'm going off memory, but my recollection was the new set seemed very rushed, like he just wanted to see how quick he could get through it. Of course, it was at one of those multi-artist concerts, so he probably was just seeing how fast he could get through it. So, if you can accept the DVD within the above limitations, then you should probably get it. If you were expecting great things, then probably not. That said, it was definitely very pleasing to watch the Bete Noire concert again because it was so well directed as a concert film. The 2002 show, on the other hand, was pretty much just somebody with a camcorder and no sense of artistry. The sound is crisper than that old VHS sound. The concert was obviously shot on film by someone who knows what they are doing, artistically edited, & benefitted enormously from this. Currently my favourite in concert Ferry material (that I can see on my TV) by far. (Memories of other shows seen live are something else!) The 2002 show is very weak by comparison, but good to have a copy for historical reasons. X Guy Quoting Jeff Turner : > I bought the DVD.
