I am like most if not
everyone here who has no need for another compilation album from the
Ferry/Roxy canon. I also have the choice to buy it or not buy it.



To put forward some statistics, the compilations in UK so far have been:



Roxy Music's Greatest Hits (1977) now deleted

Roxy Music The Atlantic Years (1983) now deleted

BF & RM Street Life (1986) 

BF & RM The Ultimate Collection (1988)

BF & RM More Than This (1995)

Roxy Music The Thrill Of It All (1995)

BF & RM Slave To Love (2000)

Roxy Music The Early Years (2000)

The Best Of Roxy Music (2001)

BF & RM The Platinum Collection (2004)

Bryan Ferry Collection (2004)

Roxy Music (Collection 2004



That is a total of 12 compilations (Including The Thrill Of It All 4CD set) from 8 Roxy and 12 Ferry solo albums. 



It has been said earlier on this thread that no one has released as many
compilation albums as BF/RM. I spent no more than 10 minutes on google
looking at a few artists I seemed to have noticed various compilations
in the records shops when browsing. I discovered in 10 minutes that? Ferry is by far
not the worst:



Eric Clapton 13 compilations from 19 Studio albums.

Blondie 13 compliations from 8 studio albums.

The Police 7 compilations from 5 studio albums.

Bowie zillions of compilations from 25 or so albums



and these are all artists who are all still active in the music
industry today.I am sure The Beatles, Elvis etc have loads of
compilations too.



I think we can see that this is a trend of the music industry in the
era of free downloading and the ability in most homes to copy a
complete clone of an album for a few pennies in a few minutes.



I am sure The Best Of Bryan Ferry is more driven by the record company than Bryan himself.

This compilation is aimed at a particular market (not us) however this
compilation more than any other of the previous compilations will take
into consideration the loyal fan base who will no doubt have all the
material on the Best Of. There has been a concerted attempt to use this
release to give something to the die hards some stuff that has been
previously unreleased/unseen etc. The main best of aims to include some
versions of singles that where only previously available on crackly old
7" vinyl and have been deleted a long time, that's something they never
thought of the 5 other times after the Boys And Girls album that? they
released the album versions of Slave To Love & Don't Stop The Dance
again. The possibility of an unreleased track is also being considered.
The album will be a 2 disc release with the second disc being a DVD.
The aim of this is to include the Ferry solo promos videos on DVD in UK for
the first time and also to include some other rare/unseen TV
performances too. (this has all been inspired by Ferry/The record
company asking the question "what could we give the fans with this
release?")



This album will raise Ferry's profile in the media agiain and set
himself up for the release of his next solo album. I would say it is
not just coincidence that the release date of his next solo album has
been intimated at roughly the same time as this compilation it is
important that the fans know that the 13th compilation is not the only
thing on the horizon.

I am going to rise from my summer torpor to make a couple of 
observations...

Eunice Kennedy Shriver died recently. 
She was a force behind the Special Olympics, which was organization to help 
change the attitudes toward differently challenged people.

Avalon, could learn from her example.
It is never "cool" to tease or condemn those different, less fortunate than 
ourselves.
Be they paranoid, self aggrandizing or, suffering from the Internet version 
of Tourette's Syndrome.
We should not make fun of, or call such people names ... or pull ropes 
attached to any part of their anatomy.

When I get a post from Avalon, my E-mail tells me who sent it. 
It is quite easy to simply delete the postings of the "Special" among us 
who's "opinion" I know in advance will mean less than nothing to me.
