I wrote BF a letter in the mid-nighties deploring yet another compilation (the one with the red coat?) and suggested that he should do an album which showed the archetypal Ferry, and suggested a track listing. Of course I've since been humbled by Avalon in realising that what I think is archetypal Ferry isn't necessarily the same as the next fan's. Anyway I didn't expect a reply and forgot all about it. Some time later I received a letter with an address written on the envelope in handwriting I didn't recognise. Imagine my elation when I discovered that it was from BF himself. Unfortunately inside he basically wrote why don't I just mind my own business. Joke. I won't repeat verbatim what he said but it was a very pleasant letter explaining basically the new compilation was down to record company strategy (I guess at the time it would've been partnered with the Video Collection), and that indeed he thought my selection of tracks was very good. Needless to say the letter is somewhere safe in an air-tight box, in a nuclear bunker, 12 miles underground. But back to the original point, I can't imagine BF fighting off earning more money but I think another compilation will just be record company instigated, and as Jonathan says, it makes sense: there's a DVD coming out, possibly a solo album and eventually, maybe a Roxy album. Whilst I'm on the subject, I might as well add that it wasn't my first letter from BF. In the late 80's I sent him demo tape of some songs I'd written, again, not expecting a reply. The tape eventually came back with a blunt pencil scrawl on the back of my covering letter thanking me for the interest, saying that he wasn't looking for songs at the time, and suggesting why didn't I try EG Management? Of course even though he was declining my songs I was over the moon with a reply. I've since learnt that at the time I think he had probably left EG Management and was indeed in litigation with them. Some joker he is, oh how we all laughed. (:-).
