All of the discussion on the list recently about Mr Ferry's delays in releasing albums has led me to reflect a little bit. We are all a bit frustrated that the Maestro takes so long? between discs, and that he seems to take forever on each one. I know that I certainly am. But: Mr Ferry ( and by extension, Roxy Music) has put out an extraordinary amount of music over his career, and has had a very long career. A quick review of several of my favourite artists finds that most of them have only put out a fraction as much, or less, in a comparable period of time. Leonard Cohen, for example, was just in town a few weeks ago (amazingly beautiful show, btw) and as far as I can tell has only put out FIVE studio albums. Yes, I would love to have the new Roxy album as my summer soundtrack. And I would love to see the Maestro perform again in this part of the world. And, yes, I believe that he has several albums worth still in him. But he has given us so much so far that we must treat these occasional releases as gifts, not as expectations. Didn't we used to drink martinis when we discussed Roxy Music? - --Andrew in Chicago Andrew Meyers, Lighting Designer P.O.Box 6069 Evanston, Illinois 60204 (773) 412-0893 AMeyersLD@aol.com Chicago * Milwaukee * The World ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 2009 10:10:51 -0400 From: jencohn201@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: New CD Release Here! here! I'm just grateful that Bryan is still around to record stuff and perform. I don't care how long it takes him and I'm sick of reading posts complaining about it - just one after the other. Get over it, don't put so much pressure on him, and just be grateful he's around. I'd give anything to have Robert Palmer back! > All of the discussion on the list recently about Mr Ferry's delays in releasing albums has led me to reflect a little bit. > We are all a bit frustrated that the Maestro takes so long? between discs, and that he seems to take forever on each one. > I know that I certainly am. > But: > Mr Ferry ( and by extension, Roxy Music) has put out an extraordinary amount of music over his career, and has had a very long career. > A quick review of several of my favourite artists finds that most of them have only put out a fraction as much, or less, in a comparable period of time. I would imagine the pressure he feels is about getting the sounds/ideas in his head to be as fully realized as possible. Often the gloss & sheen work against his purposes and devolve into a sonic version of navel gazing. A case in point is the vitality of the unrealized Alphaville VS the more polished but also more timid Frantic. This is not new news, and we have hashed this over on list many times. (And yes I'd probably like Frantic much more had Alphaville not been leaked.) I do agree that we are lucky to still have Ferry with us. His longevity is amazing in this plastic world. But... he owes me nothing, the pleasure of his existing music is what it is all about. We've joked about locking BF up and making him produce, would you really want that product? The album will be done, or not, whenever he decides to finish it. _______________ Another "living treasure"... I had the pleasure of seeing The English Beat, two nights in a row at Maxwell's, in Hoboken, New Jersey, recently. Two miles from my place and a room about as big as my deluxe and delightful, smart town apartment. Dave Wankeling is the only original. (Apparently Ranking Roger runs the "International Beat" and is touring.) Amazing energy, great crowd and they even played Jeanette, at my prodding. I always complain about bad behavior from the audience. Finally not 1 but 2 evenings with reasonably normal behavior. GREAT evenings. Also... If you have the chance to see Lady Gaga, do it! Though I was twice the age of anyone else at the show, I had a great time. + the presentation was really well done. That child is really smart and talented as well as being way, way fierce. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg3CtY2e7bk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwdXnlvUe3I Regards, R Deagle ************** Cooking Dinner For Two?
