Excellent, talk of a new Ferry album gets the debating juices flowing, and when , yes, lets say when, it comes out a further war of words over what's old, new borrowed and blue. Love it. Passion. Live it. Artists don't owe us their work, especially when they've already made an enormous contribution to culture - if we're fortunate enough to get a new album that's great, but meanwhile it seems churlish and greedy to complain that the few remaining unreleased crumbs aren't 'new' enough. Besides, I took the hint on vivaroxymusic.com to mean that Ferry has been putting his vocals down on the new Roxy songs, which means we will eventually hear a new Roxy Music album. Ferry's prolonged case of writer's block is probably borne of a desire not to besmirch the immaculate Roxy Music catalogue with a half-baked, ill-conceived, anti-climactic coda. Obviously his muse has been playing hard to get, so it's no good the fans complaining. Do we really want him to busk a few uninspired couplets and chuck the record out whatever the quality? Roxy have already recorded a perfect swansong - Avalon. Imagine how terrible it would be for a painter to finish a masterpiece and then a few years later to muck it up by adding a poorly conceived and executed new figure in the foreground! I'm pretty sure that's how Ferry sees it - - the painting analogy seems very much in step with his comments about his creativity. No wonder the poor guy's so anxious about finishing it! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 2009 08:35:22 -0500 From: Jeff Turner Subject: [AVALON] RE: New Ferry Album I for one will be glad to have a new Ferry album, even if it does consist of reworked material that's been in the can for 10 or 20 years. It would still be new to me, since I have never heard any of Ferry's famous unfinished products like Horoscope or Alphaville. A box set of those would be great; Ferry probably should be working with someone like Discipline Global Mobile, King Crimson's label, which cares only about serving the artist and songs and not how many copies are sold. My only hope for a new Ferry album, if it is another hodgepodge like Frantic, would be that he would try to make it sound like it was all from one era. On Frantic, some of the songs (such as Hiroshima) sounded like strong-voiced Ferry from the 80s, while many of the others were the breathy, wispy-voiced Ferry we met on ATGB. _________________________________________________________________ Internet Explorer 8 Now Available.
