Stars gather to raise cash for children in war-torn countries February 21, 2009 By Rick Fulton Lily Allen admits it's weird covering The Clash's "Straight to Hell" for the new War Child album, because the band's legendary frontman Joe Strummer was always at her house. The singer is one of 15 of the world's hottest stars who have covered classic songs for the new War Child: Heroes album, which is out this week. As well as Lily teaming up with Mick Jones for "Straight to Hell," Duffy has covered Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die," Franz Ferdinand have chosen Blondie's "Call Me" and Elbow have tried U2's "Running to Stand Still." More than anyone, though, Lily's cover was closest to home. The daughter of actor Keith, said: "Joe Strummer was a great friend of my father's and we spent lots of time with him and other members of The Clash. "So it's very weird to say this record is me, but it is kind of special as I'm a massive fan of The Clash. "It's a cool thing and I'm really glad I did it, I think the version's great." The idea of the album, which was recorded over six months in cities across the world, is that some of the biggest names in music select one of their favourite songs, then nominate a music hero from this generation to create a modern reworking of their classic track. Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney created a supergroup for the original War Child album titled Help back in 1995, which included contributions from Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher among others. For the fifth album, which helps raise money for children devastated by war, one of Sir Paul's greatest post-Beatles tunes, the Bond Theme "Live and Let Die," has been covered by Duffy. Sir Paul said: "I have been supporting War Child since 1995. Their work with children in war zones saves lives and their work with those who take decisions that help them to do something about it saves even more lives. "I think Duffy's version of 'Live and Let Die' is great, I was really impressed. "The breadth of talent on this Heroes project is amazing. It's great that so many people have given their time, energy and support to this initiative. I would urge everyone to support War Child and Heroes." U2 chose Brits best British Group winners Elbow to cover their tune "Running to Stand Still" from the classic The Joshua Tree album. Singer Guy Garvey said: "When the band first met each other aged 17, Mark and Craig's father Gareth would lend us his Volvo to get our gear around. "It seemed that for a year and a half, all that we listened to in that car was The Joshua Tree. I remember the excitement every time U2 released a new album. We just loved them. "The first song we ever covered together before we had enough of our own songs to do a performance was 'Running to Stand Still.' "We've changed the order of things, but kept every musical theme in the song. We wrote it with the members of U2 in mind." U2 guitarist the Edge was thrilled with their choice. He laughed: "They're a really good band. More power to their Elbow." A highlight on the album is Scissor Sisters doing Roxy Music's "Do the Strand." It's as immediate and fun as their breakthrough single, the cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry said: "'Do the Strand' is one of my best songs, and is also the lead track on my favourite Roxy album, For Your Pleasure. "I wanted to do a song about dance crazes, and in this case, the 'dance of life' was what I had in mind. "I thought the Scissor Sisters would be a good choice for this song, since, as well as being extremely talented, they are culturally aware. "They show a great sense of humour and wit in their work, and have obviously been to Broadway." Singer Rufus Wainwright covered two Brian Wilson tunes "Wonderful" and "Song for Children" from the Smile album. He said: "On television, we are constantly bombarded by all these horrific images of children in war zones. "It's important to realise that they are real people, real children, and that they need real help and real love." Visit www.warchild.org.uk/heroes for more information. THE FULL TRACK LIST... 1.
