My expectations were so low, I had actually forgotten there was a 'Roxy night' on BBC4 - I switched over, by complete accident, just ten minutes or so into the main programme and was completely transfixed. A real rollercoaster (or just possibly an airplane ride) with (hey !) Paul Thompson, (crikey !!) Brian Eno and (nurse, the oxygen !!!) Eddie Jobson all contributing. Just as important was what they said - it was great to see them all so relaxed and unguarded on camera (I laughed so much at Andy's Sid Vicious anecdote that my wife ran back into the room to see if I was all right). Mercifully too, all the non-band contributors (well, pretty much all) had something useful to say - even John Taylor has gone up in my estimation (a herculean task for a member of Duran Duran) with his praise for TGPT. Oh and top marks for overlaying 'Editions Of You' on the 1977-era punk footage... Crisply edited, the flurry of impressions was precisely calculated to evoke nostalgia for the cognoscenti. I sat there trying to take it all in, like a connoisseur of fine wine before a claret cup, or as my wife said later, "a dog leaning out the window of a moving car". Here was Rhett Davies, there Antony Price, Chris Thomas and Bob Clearmountain - it was like a distillation of Roxy, pure whiskey reeling around my head. Suddenly, amidst the whirlwind of images came the still moment of realisation that this really was a Roxy Music documentary. Not just Bryan Ferry, but actually ROXY MUSIC - Bryan's solo career only actually getting a mention in terms of the 'Manifesto' reunion. Then we reached the Frejus concert and I began to calm down, revelling in the warm glow of the 2001 tour (and how unimaginable for me, in 1973, to think I would ever be able to say 'I was there'), sensing the falling curtain and expecting the credits to roll at any second. The switch to studio footage caught me completely unawares. The music was new, but the sound unmistakeably vintage Roxy ... and there was Brian Eno ... then the penny dropped - ACTUAL FOOTAGE of the unfinished new material ! My heart skipped a beat as I realised I was actually watching a precious few seconds of Roxy in the studio again with not just Brian Eno but Chris Thomas too. I strained so much to hear every nuance that I completely missed what was being said over the top of it. Suddenly, finishing that new album seems like the most important thing in the Roxy world. I honestly had my doubts before, but if that's a representative sample of what's in store, then I really can't wait. By the way, know it's just coincidence but I should have known there was something in the air yesterday - at lunchtime, I was in a guitar shop on Charing Cross Road when the strains of 'Love Is The Drug' came wafting over the shop stereo. When I drove home from the station, the CD autochanger picked up 'Country Life' (which I haven't listened to for quite a long while) and I drove home to the 'The Thrill Of It All', pausing to catch the last bars before getting out of the car (like you do !) This morning of course, it picked up at the start of 'Three And Nine' and it seemed like the a perfect start to the new day ... Regards, Ivor n.p. I really didn't think a Roxy Docu could be that good, but I loved every second of it, and the little surprises were a joy. Tonights BBC4 Documentary took me completely unawares, the dizzy spin I'm in. Sure, we'd seen almost every clip before, but it was pieced together beautifully, and I find myself kind of grinning in that same sort of rather vacantly stupid way I did when in a very dangerously ramshackle riverside pub in Dublin 2001 following 'that' gig, fuelled not so much by beer, but by pure adrenaline. Wonderful. Seeing many of the sidemen (they were so much more than that, but you know what I mean) involved in the Roxy history, the creators, designers, people who get mentions on early Album Covers yet many never really knew who they were - - was such a bonus. The first surprise, for me though, was many words from Eno. He seldom speaks on Roxy, but this was different. In fact, he was entirely diplomatic about the 'split' whereas the others were not, which was fascinating to see. So good to have his viewpoint, so many years on. A great surprise for me though, was seeing someone who I always felt rather sorry for, in the whole Roxy thing. Yes, the forgotten man of Roxy Music. Seldom mentioned by, oh, anyone really, yet - a man who not only was around for more Albums than the aforementioned Mr Eno, but who contributed such a huge amount not only to Roxy's overall sound, but made such a major contribution to such classic Roxy records - Mother Of Pearl, Europe, Drug, Thrill... the list goes on. I speak of Eddie Jobson. Never, ever, underestimate what he did for Roxy Music. Believe me, I was there. It was so, so good to see him featured, and chatting about his time with the Band. Sure, a cameo piece as far as the Docu itself was concerned, but it was about time he was mentioned in a proper piece of Roxy Music history. Long, long overdue, but hopefully a few wrongs have been righted now. It ended all too quickly, and the 2001 tour had but a tiny mention near the end, but then there was a minute or so of such ultimate fascination. Roxy in the Studio, with Eno, and with Chris Thomas too don't you know (how perfect is that ?) from 2005. Little snippets of what could be ? Would you believe ? You know me, on this list. You know my bias. So it will come as no surprise to you when I say even those tiny snippets - I felt - had 'that' sound. The Roxy Sound - that only can happen when they are all there together. No separate bits, no solo ventures - no, no, no. Those few sounds I heard of unfinished half-made possibles, sounded so much more exciting to me, than yet another fully completed bloody cover version, thanks very much. But hey, as I said, I'm biased. Oh, how I want that Album to happen. Viva Roxy Music ! Very interesting to hear all the viewpoints about the split especially Eno and Phil's and then later TGPT's..quite revelatory really. As for the snippets of the whole of the original band playing in the studio, talk about tantalising...and then you realise it's 2005 and time has marched on and you still hope against hope that we get the album, one day soon...They are not getting any younger and neither am I!! Anyway as my DVD gave up the ghost last night, just wondering if anyone recorded all 3 items last night and would be willing to please, please let me have a copy... cheers, all, Diane - --- Johnny Reece wrote: > Well, that was fabulous. > I really didn't think a Roxy Docu could be that > good, but I loved every second > of it, and the little surprises were a joy. > Tonights BBC4 Documentary took me completely > unawares, the dizzy spin I'm in. > Sure, we'd seen almost every clip before, but it was > pieced together > beautifully, and I find myself kind of grinning in > that same sort of rather > vacantly stupid way I did when in a very dangerously > ramshackle riverside pub > in Dublin 2001 following 'that' gig, fuelled not so > much by beer, but by pure > adrenaline. I think Andy's deadpan delivery whilst twiddling his thumbs made it all the more amusing. As others have already stated, a great little program. A lot of quotes and faces we have seen many times before but there were a few new crumbs in there to savour. It was very well cut together and perhaps that's what made the difference this time. My 21 year old son actually sat and watched it alongside me and asked a few questions along the way. A rare occurrence for a boy of the ipod/bebo/facebook generation who only appears downstairs for food, money or to borrow the car keys! Like many offspring of the members here he is not a "fan" but has knowledge of the band and Ferry by default. When the show ended I felt a great sense of pride and thought THAT is why I am a fan of Roxy Music.
