While searching for something completely unrelated last night, the girlfriend and I happened upon a YouTube video of Bob Dylan doing "All Along The Watchtower" with Richard Thompson and Phil Manzenera. My two favourite guitar players, together! Its listed as Bob Dylan with Richard Thompson (Phil's name nowhere in sight) Both RT (in a t-shirt and baseball cap) and PM (in an elaborate silk jacket) play fun solos, especially Phil. Sadly, they are never in a camera shot together, standing about 40' away from each other onstage. Even more sadly, it is one of Dylan's unbelievably bad performances. I had to watch twice; the first time all the guitar work was downed out by our laughter at how bad Dylan was. He was completely incomprehensible. (AATWT plays a big role in the latest season of Battle Star Gallactica, where several characters hear the song in their heads, as a sort of set of instructions. Had it been this version, they would have been even more deeply confused.) A stellar lineup in anyone's book - PM backed by Bob Dylan (on Gibson SJ-200), Richard Thompson, Jack Bruce, the legendary Ray Cooper on percussion and the god-of-drums himself Simon Phillips ... Am I the only one who thinks PM looks a bit nervous early in his solo about just how many bars Dylan's going to allow him to do ? Regards, Ivor n.p.
