I'm much too old for general admission (standing only) venues without air conditioning that are packed to the rafters but, given the chance, I'd do it all again. Tom Waits is worth any amount of hardship suffered. The setlist varies from night to night and he plays older songs as well as new. Last night's show included Frank's Wild Years (that one alone made it all worthwhile), Misery, Lie To Me, Eyeball Kid, 9th & Hennepin, Chocolate Jesus, Shore Leave, Time, and Get Behind the Mule. If he had done Blind Love, I think I could have died right there, a happy woman. Between songs was peppered with funny story song introductions and hilarious replies to audience requests for particular songs and comments. The show lasted a bit over 2 hours including a 3 song encore. The band is tight and the only error I heard was Tom fluffing the lyrics a bit in Jesus Gonna Be Here. I've heard that the tickets in Europe are priced somewhat higher than here in the US, but if you possibly can, go see what for me was a once-in-a-lifetime experience of total brilliance. I saw him yonks ago at the Victoria Apollo and he did a ridiculous version of The Piano has Been Drinking that had everyone in stitches. There are some brilliant 'golden oldies' doing the rounds at the moment. I saw George Clinton with Funkadelic and Parliament as part of the Massive Attack Meltdown at the weekend. Average band member age must be around 94 and they played 3 1/2 hours back-to-back with everyone on their feet from the first minute and the usual stage invasion. We were all P-funked out and they were still raring to go. BTW, can't remember who it was that recommended the Tindersticks album a while back, but it is their best for a long time - perhaps because one Ms Lucy Wilkins plays on it? Oh, and while we're OT, here's one for David in New York - pick up Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings latest it's fantastic - they're from Brooklyn so you might have a chance of catching them live locally, they're supporting Jimmy Cliff at the Rise Festival in London in July if anyone else is interested.
