Subject: [AVALON] Rogue's Gallery - Live

Barbican has just posted that there is to be a live concert of the Rogue's  
Gallery album on July 28. Produced by Hal Willner (who produced the all-star  
Disney songs show at the RFH last year), this could include any or all of the  
artists who appear on the album. Bryan Ferry was due to sing at the Disney 
show  (but opted out on the day as he was "busy", according to house band member 
Leo  Abrahams) but could clearly turn up in July for the brace of songs he  
contributes to the album. Other details are scant but here they are...
 
"Based on an extraordinary recent CD release featuring Nick Cave, Sting,  
Jarvis Cocker, Rufus Wainwright, Bono and others, this concert features  
contemporary re-workings of traditional sea songs and chanteys.

Expect  songs about drinking, women, death, nasty crimes on the water and of 
course  pirates... funny, beautiful and sad songs. Special guests tbc. 

Produced  by maverick genius Hal Willner (known for his tribute records, 
covering the  music of Thelonious Monk, Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen), the idea for 
Rogue's  Gallery germinated on the set of the second Pirates of the Caribbean 
movie, with  actor Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski.

The songs (on the CD) have  titles like 'Baltimore Whores,' 'Boney Was a 
Warrior' (about Napoleon) and  'Little Boy Billee' sung by the artist Ralph 
Steadman about eating the cabin  boy. A sea chantey (often spelt shanty) is a work 
song that was sung on the ol'  ships in the day. Rhythmically they matched the 
activity speed of these men  hauling on lines. Many of them are really filthy. 
Many are very beautiful.

planet. The human being cast against that abyss creates an interesting bit  of 
perspective. I think the sailors of the time were dancing with death, and  these 
were there tunes.' '

It seems strange to buy legitimately?the second copy of this CD without informing other people who may have liked to?have got it legitimately, then to publicly announce a few days later?having this CD after the opportunity to get this legitimately had gone.

The copy of this material I have did not have any track listing and now seeing this copy on EBAY it seems this is the complete As Time Goes By Sessions. 
Some of the recordings I have also included a song that, from the lyrics would/could be called 'Won't You Let Me Go'. I had thought by the sound of it that it had come from the ATGB sessions as the strings where very much like the strings on Some Other Spring. I searched the lyrics one line at a time with the word LYRICS at the end on google but could not find it anywhere. This makes me think it is a Ferry original that he maybe wrote (or co-wrote with Colin Good) as has similar styles heard on Time On My Hands, I'm In The Mood For Love, Some Other Spring. Another song called 'Ballade' has more of a scat vocal with just some snippets of lyrics but is more like a ballad that Ferry would write in his later period (a melancholy piano driven track).

Won't You Let Me Go may be from the 40's album that Bryan had recorded some material for. It is either an original or so obscure the lyrics are not on the internet.

The version of You Go To My Head is more like Sinatra's and removed from Bryan's 1976 version.

Hi Pasi,

I have no idea what the Sight & Sound DVD you refer to is. However I am quite
intrigued because in the early 80s I came across a Super8 film in an antique
shop on the Edgware Road in London called Sight & Sound and it was of the
Wembley '75 concerts. It wasn't a proper release or anything, just a reel of
film with a label on it. One of my regrets was not buying the film it was only
#20!

I suspect it's unlikely to be that but stranger things have happend. I'd be
very pleased to see it if it were!
