From what he says, a double A-side or maybe more likely a 2-track CD single will come out in the summer and the organisers have roped him in alongside Bryan Ferry. Wogan is going to cover Roxy's "Dance Away" and Ferry will do his version of "Floral Dance", all in aid of the Countryside Alliance. While Ferry has worked his magic on many a song by converting them into his own personal sound, surely Floral Dance is beyond redemption? And while no one can doubt his support for those who rip furry animals to pieces, is this really what we want to see BF doing when there's a Roxy album to finish? Or even a solo album for goodness' sake... But Terry & Ferry is apparently the immediate future. That would be 'Answer Me' aka 'Mitterlein'. FILA is my least favourite track on ATGB; a slight song with too close an association with Dietrich for it to work for me. I've found myself listening to ATGB a bit recently, because a few months ago I purchased, perfectly legitimately, a CD called '1930s Songs'. I didn't really expect it to be anything other that ATGB, but when it arrived, it was in the promo cover that Virgin use, and contained the early mixes from that album. It's not a bootleg, but a disc for internal consumption. I guess it's what BF presented to Virgin when he was trying to get a deal. They rejected it, put it out through their German subsidiary, and it became a decent seller, earning BF a Grammy nomination as well. 14 of the 15 tracks from ATGB are on the disc (only Sweet and Lovely is missing) although three or four are unfinished (marked as 'rough mixes'). 'I'm In The Mood For Love' lacks Alice Retif's poem for example. The disc also contains 'If I Didn't Care' and 'Smoke Dreams', both subsequently released. Best of all though, the CD includes four unreleased tracks, including a wondefully slow, smooth, breathy remake of 'You Go To My Head'... Directed by Josef Von Sternberg, her svengali. Only two years after the Jazz Singer (let's see BF cover Mammy!). The film, an early talkie, was filmed in both German and English, for export, so either the English, OR German are the original. Ms. D stars as Lola Lola, cabaret star and perfect 4F date, except the guys just can't seem to get the forget part. See it for early Marlene before she becomes quite so mannered and untouchable. There's a little bit of Hausfrau in Naughty Lola. I prefer her in the Hot Voodoo number from Blonde Venus for sheer audacity. I won't give away the surprise, for those who haven't seen it. This is a bit too OBVIOUS a choice for a Ferry cover, but a fun ride nonetheless. - ------------------------------- Since everyone was groovin to the recent same name different song Thang... How about...a spot the movie references? The BF oeuvre is full of em! Infact Roxy (the theater, the impresario) is a musical version of film, in concept. So from Virginia plain's "Flying Down To Rio" to "The 39 Steps" there's a whole string of 'em. Extra points if there's a twist as in "The Chimes At Midnight", being not only a Orson Welles film but a Shakespeare line. Any takers?
