Just a few notes on what has to be currently my favourite Roxy bootleg... Prairie Rose - Strange to hear this opening a set, as it's such a great 'long farewell' piece on Country Life. What an exuberant performance though. I'm hearing a few echoes of Yes in the keyboards at the end (and in Manzanera's guitar solo he sounds as if he's channelling Steve Howe) Beauty Queen - So incredible to hear this live after so long. Bryan's flat when he comes in, but he gets the hang of the tuning pretty quickly and delivers a breathtaking vocal performance. I love the 'country' take on this song, evidently part of the 'Country Life' makeover. Manzanera is doing some lovely things in the licks department, and it's fun to hear Eddie Jobson's ritzy keyboard licks added to the mix. Most notably, it's a treat to hear Andy Mackay get a solo sandwiched in here, as he doesn't appear to play a note on the album version (even if it does sound like he's recycling the solo from the live version of Pyjamarama). And I love hearing mellotron for the last two verses, giving the song that early Roxy grandeur. Three and Nine - this is amazing, a huge treat for me as I've always loved this song (Country Life was the first Roxy album I bought, back in 1975). Nice technique to hold back the drums and give the song some extra light and shade. Ferry is in wonderful voice, and it's great to hear his harmonica playing on a Roxy song. The only thing missing is that strange chromatic run up and down the keybaord that Jobson does under the last verse on the LP version. I would love to hear this one revived for a future Roxy show (assuming we ever get one). ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V12 #366 ***************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
