This from a review in the Bangkok Post: The ominous gay-bar ambience feels about 30 years out of date, as do the songs featuring the shivery voice of Bryan Ferry. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL's new homepage has launched. Also meant to reply to Martino re YCD. I take your point Martino re artists both painterly and literary using?recurring themes, pastiche, styles, form etc etc, it's just that?I felt the name check pop list lyrics of YCD had been done so much better on Virginia Plain, Do the Strand and, indeed, in the sleeve notes of Roxy Music (the listings ,not Dr Puxley's musings) I'm just a bit bored with it now, just as I got bored as a kid with the painterly brush strokes of Van Gogh - the same ones?that mesmerised me when I first saw them, or ultimately had me wishing Vermeer had a window on the right side of his building.? I think I just expect more of Ferry. And I wonder if maybe he does too, hence his frustration with his present day lyrical output (or lack of). Now, just for controversy's sake, I'd like to throw?my hat into the ring and nominate my favourite living lyricist still producing the goods today, and a man notorious for plugging a well worn theme or two himself. One Steven Patrick Morrissey, the Betjeman of his age (In a seaside town they forgot to bomb, come, come, come nuclear bomb). Also partial to a pop art name check himself - Pasolini is me, Accattore you'll never be....Visconti is me, Magnani you'll never be (You Have killed Me). He's still consistently producing really interesting lyrics in his latest offerings, but I think my favourite line has to be a golden oldie "And you've never been in love until you've seen the sun go down behind the home for the blind". Any other nominations - all comers welcome? Jocelyn? ________________________________________________________________________ AOL's new homepage has launched. Christian Dior: can you imagine BF throwing something as good away on a b'side these days? Your could've wild on the backstreets of Laon No doubt, wreckless, legless and stoned Impregnating women or Kissing mad street boys from Napoli Who couln't even write their own name Christian Dior, you wasted your life Sensually stroking the weeve of a sleeve. This is indeed a thrilling gauntlet to throw down. The lyrics of the only credible heir to Ferry's position as Greatest Living Englishman. But, Jozza, hand on heart, have you not pooh-poohed this legend in the not-so-distant past? J'accuse! Of course he shamelessly mines the post-pubic angst of suburban youths and their quest for alienation and otherness. And his private life, save his slavish and aggressive vegetarianism, has seen a number of outrageous volte faces; I am celibate, oh, I'm Gay. I'll never go abroad, Oh I'm living in LA, oops, isn't Rome nice? It wasn't so long ago that he was brazenly cruising down the Kings Road in his top of the range Beemer! Oh Manchester, so much to answer for!! But, God, how I adore the Bard. On Jonathan Ross 2 years ago the interviewer was doing his matey stuff, all chirpy cockney, all water off a granite jaw as Mozza witheringly growled "Jonathan, we will never be friends." Oh joy. As for lyrics, where to start? This Charming Man has a late 50s Its Grim Up North feel, and not a million miles from the North East town so beautifully drawn in Bracewell's tome. Punctured bicycle On a hillside desolate Will nature make a man of me yet ? When in this charming car This charming man Why pamper life's complexities When the leather runs smooth On the passenger seat ? I would go out tonight But i haven't got a stitch to wear This man said "it's gruesome That someone so handsome should care" No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
