Jumble words here, tweak the composition there, a shift in tempo, a new dance-cover gal to strut to the strong beats of The Great Paul Thompson (plus a bevy of other talented supporting musicians) and, voila, you've got yourself a polished show on the road to sell! Seriously, there must exist a large number of monde-green - misheard lyrics - galore - in recorded BF and MR. material. Personally, I'm amused when I read his printed lyric while listening to the song ( MOP, i.e.. I read "oh lonely dreamer your chocker provokes a picture cameo" I sing as "oh lonely dreamer the joke of devotion in a cameo role"). So who other than the author, Bryan Ferry, really knows what he is singing - you're guess is a good as mine. I rather like " in England there's a moment, one nation in a groove" more so than "a needle desert notion, imagination never close". "to the Motor City> that's where I get my shoes (Detroit boots?)", you ask? If I remember correctly, Birmingham, England is/was the 'Detroit' of Great Britain as well as being renown as a city for custom-made footwear. Could very easily be "Arriba arriba Taj Mahal ". Earlier, I had thought 'arriva', then foolishly dismissed it as a Spanish- Indian lingual connection seemed non-kosher; with reconsideration, a Moorish/Saracen architectural connection would be right up Mr. Ferry's lane. Anyway, it's nice to read and dream... And 'no' Rob, I haven't listened to Dylanesque yet. Happy Trails. I find myself at odds with La Fiske over this, notwithstanding her traditionally well-researched deconstruction. Most poets and writers have a style that they revisit and, yes, remake through their canon. But is he using - although in this case, lest we forget, not publishing - actual lyrics left "turned to the wall" all those years ago? Or, as I think more likely, using that rich lyrical vein as a place to kick-start a new piece. Themes such as the wonders of the world, Arabia, Hollywood, the romance of travel, run through his work .. its what he does. And yes, he is consciously self-referencing in some of his lyrics. It's a thing artists (painters) do. He once provided an open goal for his inkie enemies by sighing "oh boy is it getting rough when my old world charm isn't quite enough" and this amusing self-deprecation was lost on many. I feel with this thread, and with the interesting stuff about San Simeon a few years back, we are in danger of forgetting that revisiting old themes, reworking actual phrases, isn't laziness or auto-plagiarism but witty self-homage (not stale fromage) Pip pip Stockaldo - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of K B Porter Sent: 31 January 2008 15:46 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] You can Dance Thanks for your kind words, Michiel. Thank God Shakespeare didn't abandon the sonnet format, that Rembrandt didn't tire of the dark and symbolic mode that denotes the hallmark "Dutch Masters"? Shelly, Pope Wilde, any artist of note has at least one thing in common - their search for perfection within their art. Bryan Ferry may be past his 'hay day, but the dog's still got legs. Why kick him just because some would say 'he's been there, done that, and he should move on'? Gees, guess I'm easy to please. You've got a way with words: really poetic, always a pleasure to read. Of course never forgetting to pay attention to the contents, as well as your style. Indeed there's nothing wrong with artists copying their own great ideas. It's not like the audience always understands or notices them right away. And whenever an artist discovers a great colour or shape or whatever he is likely to use it again and again, simply because he loves it. This song remains strange however, because it sounds (world) weary, whiny, but also very witty, full of self-mockery. Very much like Bob Dylan in his latter years has become a very funny self-mocker, with also a whiny, weary tone. Works for me if Ferry copies that Dylan-act as well.
