Now, sitting on the tube, I'm into Chapter 29. The strands are coming together, from the North East, the Dales, East Anglia, Berkshire, from the Art Colleges and provincial Universities with Art departments, yes, they are now finding themselves at the same parties in Notting Hill circa 1970. The names Puxley, Ferry, Mann, Mackay, Price, Wainwright, Catto, Eno, Eltes, Bomann...start to move in the same circles, the ingredients of the Roxy soup starting to get stirred by a tall man in a bell-hop outfit. Its edge of the seat stuff. I normally gulp down novels but I can barely read more than two pages at a time of Bracewell's billet doux to Avalonia. Indeed I am wondering if there is any point to life when I actually finish it, at this rate sometime between Christmas and New Year. Before this work so much of our conversations in Avalon amounted to little more than guesswork. Now we know the DNA of Roxy. How Andy, for instance, was a dandy who brought, with Dr P, the European romanticism to the party. How the North-East gang brought Americana. How Brian E tied it all up in an intellectual bow. It really is a revelation.
