You know, I have a sneaky feeling that it's not so much a procrastination (although that's part of it) I think it's also a distraction. That distraction being - money and Ferry's current bankability. At the V&A lecture he came back to money time and again - saying he made more money in a couple of nights playing in a band in Newcastle than his father made in a week doing hard toil. He has often been quoted that his career path was determined because there was more money in becoming a musician than being an artist-although the fact that he was a rubbish artist (his admission) may have had something to do with it! His divorce hit his pocket hard and I've had the feeling he's been trying to make the cash back as fast as possible ever since. Richer men than Ferry are still treading the dollar treadmill - Jagger is notorious for keeping the Stones on the road ad infinitum for financial reward. Ferry's never stopped touring, accepts fast-earning corporate gigs like they're going out of fashion, advertises brands he has no allegiance with (and some he does). He's happy if it's money up front and a bonus if it's a gig in a city he adores. The recent Marrakech Desert Lounge Weekender must have been a financial disaster for Puno and Pascha as the magnificent candlelit 16th century venue they'd booked echoed to the emptiness of @ 500 revellers and not the thousands they expected. But Ferry got his whack and bounced on to backing tracks, 4 real musicians and a handful of unplugged scrawny birds and gave his all to everyone who'd turned up. Now had he been paid a profit of the box office it might have been a different story. He's become something of a trouper these days, a jobbing musician (as he has also referred to himself) and certainly a man who remembers, compared to his father, his job is (fast) money for old rope. Now, whether he's just looking for excuses to put off the painful writing process is another question? As was suggested to him after Puxley died and Bryan had lyrical block "just get in a big car and be driven around London late at night. Just imagine Simon is there next to you and the words will come". Good advice. I always look at audiences when I go to concerts and just pray people turn out. I wonder how Ferry feels when the crowds don't turn out? This constant traveling and touring (gotta keep on movin' or I'll die) could be a sign of loneliness and unease. And I am sure you are right about the money - he's worked so hard for years now. A punishing schedule. And he won't go to the states to tour because it won't pay. Maybe much will depend on his perception of how good ticket sales were for the Roxy Reunion tour. Or maybe much will depend on whether he thinks he needs the Roxy name to make more money or not. He's been my hero since I was 15 so it will hurt if he ends his days playing to empty palaces. And I recall a superb post from Vapor suggesting he would "end up on his own playing piano in the Bahamas". I wonder, he's got more than this in him. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Jocelynfiske@aol.com Sent: 27 October 2007 13:45 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] No pussyfooting >But Rob it is clearly that this exchange of views is heading towards an argument, and we all know how boring that is. From what I've seen, Ferry's gigs are always pretty well attended.
