[Terence OConnor Subject: [AVALON] Cover Versions: Your Views Please. With all this talk of Kylie's cover of LITD, I hope this does for Kylie fan's what BF has done for me over the years, which is to seek out the originals of many of the songs he has covered since 1973. Thus Roxy back catalogue (Siren & Hits collections) might pick up a few sales. I've loved all of Bryan's cover albums (perhaps not all the songs on them). However none of his Dylan covers has ever convinced me to try and listen to Mr D himself, I prefer a more "produced" sound. But I did crawl iTunes for covers of "To Make you Feel My Love" as this is such a fine song. However the point of this mail is to put forward the case of when Ferry has made a cover "his own", and in my opinion better than the original or any other cover version I have come upon. I've got 3 covers in mind (although there are others). 1: She's Leaving Home. I prefer this to the Beatles original, I feel Ferry has a great voice for narrative songs. 2: Hold On (I'm Coming). I was sorry to miss this on the current tour (he put it in the night after I last saw him, but don't get me started on that!!), great version, for me better than Sam & Dave, but Soloman Burke's version comes close. 3: Miss Otis Regrets. Ferry takes on the "serious" side of this crime song brilliantly, for me beats Ella and the all the other "divas" that have never got to the tragedy at the heart of this song. Looking forward to other Avalonians faves. Terry 'O' PS: You are My Sunshine, was never a consideration!! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2007 11:15:59 -0400 From: "KB Porter" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Cover Versions: Your Views Please. 1) "I Put A Spell On You" Screamin' J Hawkins' original is weird wire, Ferry's version is spooky, more cohesive and thematic. Like both versions but prefer Ferry's. 2) "Rescue Me" Martha and The Vandellas' original is great, Ferry's version nearly flies under radar as a cover song - only the lyrics give it away - he's taken a popular and classic boisterous song, changed it ever so into a stealth heart-tearing piece that nearly leaves one gasping for air in the realization that 'This!, IS - Rescue Me!?!!' 3) "Amazing Grace" - Never has a choir or congregation sounded as good a Ferry. 4) How can "The In Crowd" be made better than the Ferry/Roxy ditty? 5)... So many covers, too little patience to numerate... Shall let others blast away... Best wishes. I bought the first Velvet Underground album around 1983 but had never noticed what a good song "All Tomorrow's Parties" was until Ferry released "Taxi." Had the same experience with "One Way Love," which unbeknownst to me is a Drifters song that appears on the anthology I bought ten years ago. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 16:08:29 EDT From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Possibly and hopefully my last I'd rather he just released a new album and expressed his politics on that. Must say the video is quite boring as home movies normally are, but fortunately the appearance by BE is just 25 seconds in and lasts but a few seconds. _http://www.stopwar.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=12 &Itemid=169_ (http://www.stopwar.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=12 &Itemid=169) I'm pretty sure that the newish Prime Minister's vow to reduce the UK troop presence in Iraq by 50% before next Spring (albeit including previously planned and reported withdrawals and omitting replenishment troops due to fly out) had absolutely nothing to do with the protest and was surely more to do with the fact that there will be an election sometime when someone feels the time is right. Trouble is polls are so frequent nowadays... Victor bravely treads: "I bought the first Velvet Underground album around 1983 but had never noticed what a good song "All Tomorrow's Parties" was until Ferry released "Taxi."" "Taxi" is often dissed around this site (for reasons never well explained), I remain resolute in my belief that this disk is one of the best 'covers' albums of modern times. Furthermore, Ferry's version of "All Tomorrow's Parties" has historically been trashed by Lou Reed fans who post on Avalon, but being a Ferry fan, I rather like ATP al la BF. So There! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!
