Disagree about Taxi, especially side one. I'm not really interested in chart positions or his financial worth. I think his love life is of interest, and the Lucy/Kate doppelganger thing can't be dismissed, but I'm sure it turns a lot of folks off. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of rob.whiteford@larcltd.co.uk Sent: 04 September 2007 00:34 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: RE: [AVALON] Things Apart from the rather good faves thread it's a little quiet on here. So I thought I'd offer up some opinions and questions for people to ignore, agree or disagree with. 1. Ferry sings BETTER now than ever. (did you notice sonnet 18 getting votes as best vocal?) He doesn't get much credit on here for that, with people preferring tone deaf mutterings from the early seventies :) 2. I don't think he has written a song since Alphaville, except for maybe I Thought. 3. He is quite astonishingly good looking for any age never mind nearly 62. 4. His promotion and management appear to have improved. 5. Saw Katie in Hello mag with BF at Goodwood. Looking VERY like Lucy. Katie that is. Same hair. 6. I wish people would get off their a**ses at his concerts. Or that he played standing venues more often. 7. "I thought" is quite magnificent. A lost masterpiece. Second best harmonica solo as well. If that was on For Your Pleasure the prog rock fans would be raving about it. 8. Did he love Lucy and she him? 9. Why did only the Daily Mirror have to retract its Nazi nonsense? 10. This never ending tour which seems to have gone on from ATGB has been a great chance to see the best rock star perform live before he just cant do it anymore. He looks fit and healthy but that sort of schedule must knock hell out you in your sixties. 11. New Town is the best concert video ever - blowing the Roxy ones away. Especially his fisog when Michelle Cobb makes a hash of a high note in the title track. 12. He should try to write more with Brian Eno - stops him being too mainstream. 13. His performance of LST at the Fashion Rocks event a few years back was the coolest I have ever seen. If anyone has this please contact me off list. 14. His sleeve covers have been rather naff since Taxi. 15. Taxi was largely rubbish. 16. How much is he worth now after his divorce settlement? 17. That Cruel Ships captain thing is pretty good. 18. Whats happened about this Carlsberg commercial thing? Bonus Comments 19. I wish I could bump into Bryan as often as Jocelyn. 20. He still has a number one single and album in him. So I thought I'd offer up some opinions and questions for people to ignore, agree or disagree with. (1) <> I think his live performances are much more 'in tune' now. This could be to a number of things including how much better P.A. systems and monitoring is than it was in the '70s. Most 70's acts sound better live now due to this. I don't think his voice now if it where a new voice to the scene?would grab the attention that his Virginia Plain/Mother Of Pearl voice did. (2) <<>> I don't think he has written?A song since Alphaville. Having said that, the fact he has put the Roxy album on hold would suggest to me that the Roxy album will contain new material and not just Paul, Andy & Phil added to the recordings he already has on the shelf. (3) <<< He is quite astonishingly good looking>>> He is not my type. (4) <<< His promotion and management appear to have improved.>>> It would appear that way. (5) I don't read much into and comment even less on his private life. (6) <<>> I believe Bryan prefers this too. (7) <<>> The good thing about this track is that it shows he can still do it 30 years on. (8) See answer 5 (9) I think Martin answered that one well enough. (10) <<>> Yes it must do but we all work for a living and do long hours etc. Footballers and musicians are no different and are due no more or less sympathy than any other employed person. There are 500 people on the site I work on and they do around 70 hours a week, every week. Some of them look like the south end of a north going horse but some look none the worse for it.? (Incidentally here it is:?? http://glendoe.camstreams.com/ (11)<<>> I agree that this the?most 'Ferry'?Ferry solo tour for me. (12) <<>> I think even his own writing benefits from working in a band situation even if it is not co-written. Band members are more likely to have a say than a hired hand. (13) <<>> I still haven't seen that. (14) <<>> Slave To Love the ballads compilation has a nice current photo but I agree the rest have not been his best. Dylanesque has grown on me. (15) <<>> I think this album sounds more like a Ferry album than some of his self penned solo music. Some good tracks on it. (16) See answer 5 & 8 (17) <<>> That one grew on me too, he did?a good job from what was maybe not the best source material. (18) <<< Whats happened about this Carlsberg commercial thing?>>> Probably the best advert in the world. (19) <<>> Why do want to bump into Jocelyn as often as Bryan???? (20) <<>> An album yes, a song fit for number one, maybe. I don't think artists of his age/experience etc get the airplay etc now to put them to the top of the singles chart. It would have to get there with the help of some other exposure like a Bond theme or something like that.
