He would occasionally come to visit her, and Bruce would point out this cheery, if slightly down-at-heel character in the scarves and the faded cords as he and I walked back from school. Truth is, at 13 or so, I was such a callow youth that I scarcely knew who Mick Jagger was, let alone his brother, despite their physical resemblance, so I routinely affected ambivalence to cover my ignorance. I might have paid more attention had I realised the connection with Roxy, this being around the time I had acquired a cassette copy of Greatest Hits. Bruce himself went on to a certain amount of notoriety, as the guitarist with a fairly well-known indie punk band called The Subhumans. I well remember a few afternoons spent with Bruce, his mate Trotsky and my College pal Phil, who could scarcely hold down a chord, improvising execrable versions of Bony Moronie and Great Balls of Fire. Barely a year later, the three of them were playing the LA Colosseum as support to Black Flag, and I was working in an off-license. Ho-hum. Anyway, I digress. Having not heard anything about Jagger for years, he cropped up on the local BBC station Radio Bristol a few years back, with a short section in the early evening arts show during which he would play the best of American roots music. I should explain that the Radio Bristol playlist is so easy-listening, they think the Eagles are out there. Very regional BBC. Jagger's choices for his spot became more and more, ahem, 'esoteric' as time went on, to the point that one evening he played a funk number called Strokin' that was so sexually unambiguous that the co-host Keith Walmington had to fade it out after two verses and make his apologies. Funnily enough, I don't remember CJ being on after that...
