What a great report Jocelyn, truly are the Lois Lane of Avalon! Well done for taking the time to engage Ferry in some intelligent and fruitful conversation.? You got more out of him than most professional interviews I've read. Wanna job? ;) Enjoy the rest of your trip! J ps: And you've instigated a Ferry/Stax revival! Nice one! pps: Fonzi Thornton is back!? Could things be any better!!!? - -----Original Message----- From: jocelynfiske@aol.com To: avalon@smoe.org Sent: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 11.45pm Subject: [AVALON] New York Calling As Marlana pointed out, a very relaxed Ferry on Letterman last night and yes that was Fonzi Thornton?providing the "woops" on Tom Thumbs Blues and clapping like an over excited big girl at the end. Nice to see him back in the fray (not The Fray). Well, I'm in the Big A on holiday at the mo, and so it would have been rude not to venture down to J&R this afternoon. It's 93 degrees and practically 100% humidity, but F saunters into the store half an hour late wearing a suit?and tie. We're informed that he will only be signing Dylanesque?and anything else put in front of him?will be confiscated. That's J&R trying to traffic us through the store a toute vitesse?and forcing hands into buying the goods. I get there and dump what I planned to stick in front of him anyway which he signs with pleasure (someone has a very nice surprise coming their way when I get back home). And then I decide to ask him about collaborations, mentioning that it might be time to look at contemporary producers. I asked him if he was aware of Mark Ronson and lo and behold he'd just had dinner with MR's mother last night. He said he was thinking of asking him to remix one of his tracks (didn't say which one). We blathered about Amy Winebar and he gave the stock "oh, I love that song, what's it called, Rehab". I ventured that Back to Black was the real track on the album and he said he hadn't heard it. We mused about it being easier to write when you're broken hearted. Then Bryan said he'd love to hear Mark Ronson's album but couldn't find it. Just as well I took my copy to give to him then wasn't it? So expect some Staxy remix thing coming your way - some time or the other. Security's getting a bit didgy?with the held up line now and so before taking my leave I shoot in a couple of questions I know you guys were asking.? He says his schedule doesn't allow for any American dates this time?I'm sorry to say and he promises the Roxy album will be out next year. I'd take the last one with a large pinch of salt. But generally he was on top form, ultra relaxed and friendly and looking damn fine. Will download some pics and send them to Vivaroxymusic.com if anyone's interested. Now back to shopping. I was about 3 people behind you. You're the one who said "see you at the Tower Of London, Sunday" I agree Late, incredibly Muggy, J&R staff helpful but not TOO helpful, although they did guarantee me my space in line for a W. C. break. BF was pleasant & gracious as usual. Signed my 4 copies + one other item as per the "Rules". Said he enjoyed the books I slipped him for the tourbus after the last Radio City gig. Then, back out in to the 10000000 degree NYC heat. Glad I was there an hour early so as not to have had to stand outside. Should have asked BF he knew of Keely Smith as she'd also been on TV the night before, for her new "Keely sings Sinatra" album. I'd bought a KS CD upstairs before getting in line. She's the first person I ever heard sing "You Go TO My Head" Recommend her to all of you who like the "As Time Goes By" BF material. Her old records have Nelson Riddle arrangements that are amazing. I opted not to go because it's not so good for me to be running around in the heat right now. My husband had asked if I was going to try to go to Letterman but the heat and humidity.... I hope he is coming to America - sooner rather than later too! You'd figure that any day would be fine because it would be great to have him perform over here no matter when but my concert-going days will be on hold for awhile and my last big hurrah will probably be The Cure concert in late September. Jocelyn's post covers most of the specifics about his late arrival, looking good, etc. My individual experience ended with an odd twist though.... I arrived about 12:15 for the 12:30 autograph session and that meant I was outside on the sidewalk in 95 degree heat and worse humidity, unlike the first 50 or so who basked inside in air conditioning. Other than chatting with other linestanders, I basically watched the guards stroll up and down keeping the doorways clear. One of the women who stopped and asked a guard if this line was for Bryan Ferry seemed oddly familiar, but I wasn't sure why. I finally got up to Bryan about 1:30 or so and gave him my long held suggestion that he record a Christmas album. He smiled and asked, "like Phil Spector or something?" and I said sure, only more bittersweet as only you could do it. He mumbled thanks, smiled, shook my hand and I was whisked away by security towards the store exit. I wanted to ask about the Dumbells Christmas single from back in 1980 that Roxy supposedly recorded, but got hurried along without getting to. Anyway, if Bryan does a Christmas album now, I claim credit for the inspiration--or at least the push! ;-) Back to the line I went, down the sidewalk to the oddly familiar woman, and I discovered that, sure enough, it was my college girlfriend of five years, who I had not seen since 1982 (25 years!) and who---here's the cool part-- introduced me to the then-new (to us in Florida, at least) band called Roxy Music back in 1973! We had a happy reunion for a few minutes there in line. She had taken the day off from work in Boston just to get Bryan's autograph and I was in New York for two weeks from Virginia while my teenage son is doing a high school internship at the United Nations.
