Excellent stuff really enjoyed reading that. After watching the Swedish TV clip I'm confused about the facts of the situation. Ferry claimed that his lawyers were looking at it (to Robert E Lee I'll show it) because he was very upset that the word "Nazi" had never been mentioned in the entire interview. He also flatly denied the "Fuhrerbunker" word had ever been used saying it was "ridiculous". But a quick google search on "Ferry Nazi" now reveals squillions of articles. What exactly did he say? - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Stephen Thrower Sent: 15 May 2007 11:26 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] Sorry to come in so late on such an old story... Rob asks: "What exactly did he say?" That IS the question, and unless an audio record of the "Welt Am Sonntag" interview exists, we will never know IF the transcriber(s) took liberties by interpreting and then injecting "Nazi" and "Fuhrerbunker" into the answers Mr. Ferry gave. It is vexing that the recent BBC article regarding the non-renewal of BF's M&S contract seems to assert the "Welt Am Sonntag" quotations as an absolute truth . - Shouldn't the Beeb use qualifiers, such as 'alleged', 'purported', 'claimed', 'disputed', or 'denied' when referencing the "Welt Am Sonntag" article? If, as Mr. Ferry claims he did not use those specific words in the "Welt Am Sonntag" interview then I'd say he has a cause for libel - especially if he has an audio record of the interview that would serve as proof. (Rhetorically speaking, if you were to be interviewed for an article to be published, especially when you know your words will be translated outside your fluency, wouldn't you want to make an audio record of your interview - just in case?) I agree with Stephen Thrower's assessment: "It seems to me that Ferry was careless not to attach the usual caveats about the monstrousness of the Nazis' political regime (perhaps assuming, naively, that they could be taken as given),"... and, "He neglected to condemn the Nazi regime, and was thus 'underdressed' for the occasion. That is if we can believe the transcripts, and allowing for the fact that tone of voice or implication can play a part.". When news media has its own agenda and political bias, as is increasingly noticeable now-a-day, one can never be too careful to guard their words meant for publication, and one can never too careful to remain mindful that unquestioning consumption of news-twisted reporting is like 'sheep to the slaughter'. Very good and informative post, Stephen. Best wishes.
