Am I the only one to spot a bit of a contradiction in these two arguments? If an interest in Nazi art is by no means an indication that you support the Nazi movement (and I agree with that view), then why should a dedication to African American and Jewish arts prove that you disagree with Nazi ideology? That second argument is a weak one, often used by bigots of all trades to protect themselves from criticism, and I'm pretty sure that Bryan is not one of them. I think he should have avoided that point, especially since he has so many strong ones in his favor. He didn't admire them because they were black or Jewish. Likewise he happened to admire art that happened to have been adopted by Nazi's. We should probably let the subject rest now, give the old warcriminal a break. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Antoine Bianchi" To: Sent: Friday, May 04, 2007 1:45 PM Subject: [AVALON] Re: A Personal Statement > Bryan Ferry wrote: >> From an art historical perspective, the work of German modernists is >> widely acknowledged; to suggest that an aesthetic and historical >> interest in them is evidence of agreement with or an endorsement of >> the politics of their creators, or of the people they served, is, >> frankly, ridiculous. >> >> My entire career as a singer and songwriter has in many ways been a >> paean to black American and Jewish art forms and artists - to soul >> music, jazz, blues, and to the great writers and performers of >> Hollywood and Broadway musicals. > > Am I the only one to spot a bit of a contradiction in these two arguments? > If an interest in Nazi art is by no means an indication that you support > the Nazi movement (and I agree with that view), then why should a > dedication to African American and Jewish arts prove that you disagree > with Nazi ideology? > > That second argument is a weak one, often used by bigots of all trades to > protect themselves from criticism, and I'm pretty sure that Bryan is not > one of them. It was taped in Paris, in front of a small audience, on March 8 and 9 (Bryan's performance was on the 9th) and broadcast on the French/German TV channel Arte on April 13 (and then again on the 18th). The main guests were Joss Stone (on the 8th), Kyle Eastwood, Bryan Ferry and Air (on the 9th). Host (and drummer) Manu KatchC) had also assembled a 'house band' for the show. Most of the broadcast consisted of live performances, with some behind-the-scene and rehearsal footage as well. Although it looks as though the artists were actually recorded one after the other, the performances were re-ordered for the show, so that Bryan had two songs at the beginning (Just like Tom Thumb's Blues and Positively 4th Street) and then one later on (All Along the Watchtower) and one towards the end of the show (Slave to Love). There were no interviews in the broadcast, but there is a short one of Ferry by KatchC) (not done during the show) on Arte's website (it requires the Real player): rtsp://212.95.67.121:554/permanent/c2/oneshotnot/ferry_512kbps.rmvb Bryan's band was his current live band minus Spedding, Newmark and one backing vocalist, plus KatchC) and two other unknown backing vocalists. I don't know if they played more songs than what was shown on Arte or not. Bryan could be seen 'looking on' very briefly during a performance of Leon Russell's 'Song for You' by the house band, but apart from that it looks as though he was only there for the recording of his own performance. Arte will also be showing the Bryan Ferry/Dieter Meier documentary (shot in Zurich) this Wednesday at 24.40 CET, by the way. If anyone would like a copy of the One Shot Not DVD, please contact me offlist. I would be interested in getting other recent TV broadcasts (including the Montreux 2004 one on Sky), too.
