Thought Glasgow was superb, and agree that Ferrys voice is excellent and strong. In a loggia box at the back, the sound quality was poor, something I've noticed in this hall before, although always been in the stalls before. In fact were it not for the very kind American gentleman next to me sharing his red wine I'd have been more bored than I was. Yes it's a brave setlist, yes he's in fine form, but from where I was sitting the hall was dead until the last 3 songs. It all happened in such a hurry again, with Ferry sometimes talking over music to introduce the songs or say something. "What no encore?" said Lynne at the end, I had to tell her that LST and LITD was it. Something not right last night, couldn't put my finger on it except for the sound quality issue and largely apathetic audience until LST. Nothing to do with Bryan who sang superbly, but the atmosphere just wasn't there for me. Back to row 4 in the stalls at Brighton on Tuesday, so maybe that will do the trick! Nice to meet Jocelyn and John O Brien (finally!) briefly before the show. The famously shuffling feet of Bryan Ferry failed to put a foot wrong with any rumours of his voice not being up to scratch and failing fast completely erroneous. I have never heard him sing so well. See Vivaroxymusic for the setlist. I can tell you it was a storming, breakneck 'put your foot down round the bend' spectacular. The flow of the songs was amazing. Kiss and Tell jumping impatiently in, hot-foot after the In-Crowd. The Energy was incredible. The band were on great form as well, the players playing their parts superbly. The little lad on guitar gets better and better going to 11 and upping the cool stakes to ridiculous levels! There's an energy and humour to the Mr Ferry these days that suggests he's really enjoying himself. No. More than 'suggests' - he's loving it. I did too. J ps: Love the tour book - great photos, brilliant mini-Bracewell essay - Morely read and take note - lovely Anna Nicole Smith tribute (totally unexpected but a lovely, lovely touch), effective but subtle pushing of the back catalogue and, most importantly a much deserved credit for the ever-unassuming John O'Brien. Classic! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 10:01:24 -0000 From: "S.J.Batie" Subject: [AVALON] RAH Great gig though i thought rather rushed ? the only real downer for me was andy newmark spoiling the second half of TIE - he just carried away. the girls upstairs on the number 10 bus got most people singing along to their rendition of LITD most of the way to oxford street .... steve ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 06:43:04 -0400 From: jocelynfiske@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Royal Albert Hall >Never one to agree for the sake of it, I didn't particularly enjoy the RAH show. Oh Rob Whiteford, you miserable old bugger! Even from my uncustomary seats in Martinoland you couldn't deny that was a brilliant concert. Ferry is very relaxed these days and put on a very obvious peacock with his tail displayed (wasn't quite how I put it to Jane Fraser!) performance for his paramour who was sitting in the row infront of us. I think Ferry is always delighted when a notoriously hard audience like London greets him like the proverbial prodigal son. Even with his usual 'plants' all over the audience (who IS that Dracula man?!) there was some extraordinary over the top audience behaviour. The two big lasses who galloped like rhino in 5th gear right at the beginning of 'In' Crowd and then didn't know what to do when the slow numbers kicked in. They were up and down more often than whores' drawers. And we had an amazing geriatric in a marathon t-shirt who looked like she was about to vault onto the arena floor but settled for some manic hippy whirling dervish dance. And then there was our immediate entertainers. The man behind me who was obviously a big Dylan fan who kept yelping like he was being Tazered, and the grumpy gits in cardies who tried to have us thrown out for standing up during Watchtower. Get back to the Cliff Richard concert grandad! Ferry's voice was really strong, let's hope the 3 on 1 off schedule continues to work. He's still delivering what for Ferry amounts to audience banter. The band are getting tighter all the time, although Andy Newmark was on autopilot again - why does he do that when he was so electric at Edinburgh? Just Like You was about the only time I thought Ferry's voice faltered a little so that may disappear again, the dueling guitars of Ollie and Spedding sounded wonderful from where we were (sorry Rob, perhaps it was all down to the sound for you). Ferry was using that over pronounced intonation more than ever. Up til now it was only really eveident in Gates of Eden when he goes "the mow-ter-cy-kill". More of that please. And thank goodness for the new toilet break song, now renamed the Flood Gates of Eden, you can get out and back in time for the last 59 verses. Saw Nicky Haslam resplendent in lilac cropped jacket and retro skinny leather tie wandering bemused (although it's difficult to tell with all that botox) outside the ladies. Thank god he didn't opt for that leather jock and fishnets again (would have clashed with me). And marvelous that it looks like Jealous Guy has disappeared for good. Sorry I missed you Andy, I was convinced our seats were adjacent. I guess not. And there are so many bars in the RAH, all with the atmosphere of Ladbrokes (I went to the bar for a vodka and ended up placing a fiver each way on Son of Desert Orchid) we kept moving to try and find a better one. And where were you Martino? Great to see some friendly faces from across the water, hope you thought your flying trip was worth it. >Nice to meet Jocelyn and John O Brien (finally!) briefly before the show. You make us sound like French and Saunders! Mind you, unless O'Brien gets some new jokes we'd never get a booking.
