For a moment I thought my "Paul shoves Andy Newmark off his stool" premonition had come true. Thanks for that report, you painted an excellent picture. Cheers, Colette - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Jocelynfiske@aol.com Sent: 11 March 2007 15:43 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] Paul Thompson is a SOD - official Looks like I'm the last straggler of our merry band of travellers back home - - even our Miami resident's beaten me to it. Blimey, such a lot to catch up on. But first, a reply to Collette. TGPT is gone - long live his newly Ferry-applied moniker, 'Son Of Durham' herein to be referred to as SOD. Responding to the 5 minutes to band on stage at the Sage bell, I dragged my sorry flu-laden self to a side door at the front left of the hall, when a familiar voice from the zig-zag shadows calls "Jocelyn!". I turn and who's standing there fairly glowing with health I'm pleased to report, but the Old SOD himself. He can hardly contain himself with excitement, yes I have that effect...oh, to be playing at the Sage "on a few numbers". Didn't take long to work out where the run of three tracks that he knows off by heart are. I would love to have heard him jam blind on All Along the Watchtower though. Being a smart arse, I'm sitting there nodding Sagely to myself as the lights go down that the give-away is the Yamaha kit and Andy Newmark doing an uncustomary run through the drums before kicking into 'In' Crowd. The SOD tells me later that it's Andy's kit and I hang my head in shame. The whole band is very relaxed again tonight - a legacy of a fantastic concert in Edinburgh two nights previously, with Ferry being more vocal that usual. As Tracy mentioned there was a hiccup prior to TIE, not the track you want your bass to fail in. As the instrument police rush round with numerous pluggy-inny bits and Prefect Colin Good points an accusing finger at poor old Guy Pratt, Ferry laughs and leisurely announces "well, anyway.... we had an album come out on Monday, that was a track from it. I'd tell you some jokes, but I don't know any...anyway he's (GP) the stand up comedian". How about "A Geordie walks into a bar, and buys a drink". That's pretty funny. And on to the end of Watchtower, where Ferry introduces the band. At the back the SOD and AN stand with their arms around eachother's shoulders in a touching display of mutual respect, as the former takes over from the latter's warmed up seat. Ferry introduces the Son Of Durham to the biggest cheer of the evening and blam! It's like he's never been gone. It was practically the only time the audience, whom Ferry thanked for being great, when in fact they were shite and should be ashamed of their old decrepit selves, got off their arses. The Sage is an acoustic miracle (no muddiness in the front few rows, and sweet spots everywhere) but it is sterile of atmosphere. It's an almost organic, curvy delight of a job lot of top-end pine and smells bizarrely of the first day of school term when your desk tops have all been polished to remove the filth of the previous term, and glue. Which might account for why no-one could get off their seats. But thankfully, the band enjoyed it immensely and I think Ferry focused on the few dotted around going dotty, certainly the lasses in the balcony were giving it a good go. He even toyed with the nutter with the flowers, egging her on to place the bouquet baton-like in his hand as he gravedug to Spedding's guitar during LST, and mouthed thank you. Catch him on a bad night and whoosh - into the Tyne with them! Perhaps, like the Cloak of Invisibility, Ferry felt invincible in his tartan Magic Trousers as he named them in Edinburgh while pulling out the entire fabric's width for us all to admire. Just so long as he doesn't have any Magic Beans that he insists on rubbing in public - that could empty the hall. I'll try and recall some choice titbits from my afters conversations for later, but meanwhile, in the absence of an invigorating bloody mary, it's time for another Lemsip.
