In actual fact, Peter Paul and Mary really drew early attention to Dylan's work in 1962. They had a huge hit with 'Blowin' in the Wind', and recorded the best version ever (IMHO) of 'Times they are a' Changin'. They've also covered 'It aint me Babe', 'Don't think Twice', 'Quit your low down ways', 'Bob Dylan's Dream', 'Too Much of Nothing' , and 'I Shall be Released' amongst others...Peter Paul and Mary, along with the Byrds, gave great voice to Dylan's early work. Received my copy of Dylanesque in Australia today...played it about 4 times over already. Excellent methinks, but I could have done without 'If not for you'...some of the other songs sound as though they were specially written for Bryan. Great enjoyment! Factually incorrect on Love Me Madly again being Roxy. "Voice of the Countryside Alliance" indeed. Also it is hardly complacent to be singing new and obscure old songs when you have a back catalogue like his. What rubbish. Although I mentioned afterwards, I think a fair number of the public would feel this way. http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/featuresartsreview/display.var.1237152.0 .0.php ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2007 10:33:06 -0000 From: "David Dodds" Subject: [AVALON] Gateshead Last night was possibly the best Ferry gig I've ever seen. From his slick entrance for The 'In' Crowd to the sax/whistling end of Jealous Guy he was in great form throughout singing with an authority and passion reminiscent of the early days. The band were classy and the totally unexpected guest appearance of The Great Paul Thompson went down a storm . The entire set was great but standout numbers for me were This Island Earth, Love Me Madly Again, Just Like You, Simple Twist Of Fate and Positively 4th Street. Even Let's Stick Together was revitalised and fresh and the version of Jealous Guy was almost a carbon copy of the original live Roxy reworking all those years ago. And to cap it all BF even sported his tartan trousers after his mid session break! All in all a fantastic night that will be long remembered. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2007 12:52:28 -0000 From: "Nigel Hollis" Subject: [AVALON] Dylanesque Tim wrote :- "So I cancelled that order and went to Amazon.co.uk and ordered it there. It arrived on March 6th - well suprised only a day after it`s official release. Not sure at all about the album at first, no Dylan fan is I and too used to hearing covers by Clapton and the Byrds etc.....having to absorb the songs in their own right of course. Having listened to it a number of times though it is slowly encroaching on me. Is it a classic from Mr F?, will it stand the test of time or will we get "bored" with it? I get the impression that this is whats happend to Frantic perhaps? Anyway, sure is good to see our man getting all this publicity across the whole spectrum of the media. So, really looking forward to Bournemouth but it appears a long way off right now. Regards to all. I agree with those who said he is probably *not* disappointed. His clapping says it all; he's just maintaining his trademark public grin because he knows there are cameras on him. In Ferry's defense, I will say that I have never performed any of his songs either (publicly, that is). Now awaiting a Dylan-does-Ferry albumb& No Ferry concert for me this year as it is (unless he adds a few continental festival dates this summer b Montreux would be really nice), but I'll be catching Dylan in Geneva. Bet he'll do a few songs off Ferry's latest release! Some of us tried to get it going before that but it was a hard task. The house lights never seemed to go down totally to darkness and it still seemed a bit bright to me. No good for taking photos as security can spot you a mile off. A slight panic when he put in LITD with the fear being one of the old songs would be dropped but I assume after the subdued crowd in Carlisle he felt the need to "jolly things up a bit" with a standard. It was great o hear the "old & rare" songs and a total shock when they played To Turn You On. Pity that one had been dropped but maybe it will make a return further down the tour. Glasgow was a much better atmosphere and the crowd an improvement but still not the Glasgow of old where everyone went wild. Security there is always a problem but at least this time we managed to get down to the front a wee bit sooner thanks to the man himself on stage giving the nod to us to go forward. Far more recognition for JLY, WSWITR, LMMA and TIE. Edinburgh topped the lot for me and I like to think I am not being biased and will be interested to hear the views of others. The crowd were on the case from the first note and up on their feet. The nature of the set list seems to be that people stand up for the upbeat songs and sit for the quieter stuff. The clapping and cheering seemed louder and went on for longer and it seemed to have a very positive affect on the band and Bryan. I was aware of the crowd singing along really loud here also which I hadn't heard so much at the other venues. There also seemed to be a serious attempt at a crowd chant which I never heard at the other two shows. Perhaps it is down to the venue as The Playhouse is a traditional old theatre and is very tall and upright with steep inclines as opposed to wide and low. I guess from the stage the crowd must seem a lot closer and they get a better idea of what id going on out there. There is nowhere to go "down the front" as if you sit in the front row of the stalls your knees are up against the orchestra pit. For some shows the pit is gone and there is space but they have just had a run of a musical there so I guess it was still in place. Bryan and the band seemed to soak up the crowd and looked a lot more relaxed and I imagine they will be more as the tour goes on. Highlights for me were hearing Just Like You live for the first time, tears were shed. When She Walks in The Room also had me welling up. Love Me Madly Again was beautiful as was the Dylan track Make Feel My Love. The only downside was the absence of Paul on drums. I missed his sound greatly and the way he clicks his sticks in appreciation to the crowd. It was great to meet up with friends old and new again and a very big thank you to Gill Casey from Dundee for capturing my "Kodak Moment"! I've been waiting for BF to come to the symphony hall for a long time, it was the perfect setting for the ATGB tour. Great acoustics and beautiful surroundings. This a brave tour, the first brave one since ATGB. Since then we've had the guarenteed success of Roxy Music and the Frantic tour was a Greatest Hit's fest. This for me was the most exciting Ferry tour since IYM way back in 77. He is standing by Dylanesque by performing a huge chunk of it and also supporting his past glories by giving us fans TIE & LMMA, Just Like You was dropped (God I've waited sooooo long for this, I was GUTTED) . Who could wish for more (I know "As the world turns" is a dream), but hey, the guy sounds great, looks cool and has a top ten album on has hands. This is his time and this time it's on his own terms, not due to a greatest hit's package. Now if he would only drop JG and pop in The Price of Love as a closing number!! The band sounded great and played better, Olli Thompson bringing a fantastic In Crowd to a screaming close. A little group of Avalonians ( Chris Cassidy? ) tried to stand up at the start of the show but quickly settled back into thier seats. As for dropping JLY, shame on you Bryan. The VOICE was brilliant, strong and enjoying the songs. I wish he could get over this shyness thing a bit, especially in these more intimate venues, just a little more than a mumbled " form the Bride Stripped Bare " hardly endears you to an audience trying to cope with a very new and unknown set. Great/Brilliant for ardent fans, but one of the girls I brought along said as we left "ok but should do more of his own stuff", as a result of this the spaces between songs were almost non existant, this due to a lack of huge applause. Of course A Hard Rains, LST & JG sent most people home happy, ME INCLUDED. Terry 'O' Bryan Ferry Set List Symphony Hall Birmingham Thursday 8th March 2007.
