I am very new to Dylan songs, the only one's I know are covers, this maybe because I was the youngest (by 12 years) of 3 children, both my sister & brother being in thier teens in the sixties were of course Beatles/Stones/Dylan fans. I only wanted "my own music", and grew up on a staple diet of glam (Bolan/Bowie/Roxy), followed by electronic/disco/trance/jazz etc: as the years slipped by. To get myself in the mindset for this I've been playing all of Bryan's albums with covers on for the last week or so & resisted downloading the Dylan originals. So Dylanesque is like a "new" record to me, the only Dylan tracks I'm aware of are as follows: A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall (B F) It Ain't Me Babe (B F) If Not For You (Olivia Newton John, didn't even know it was written by BD) Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Eric Clapton) The Times They are A Changin' (????, maybe Dylan heard on the radio) Like A Rolling Stone (David Bowie) There must be more, but they don't jump easily to mind. Anyway with the exception of the songs above I don't know any of the other songs on Dylanesque, so for anybody interested here are "my thoughts". 1: Just like Tom Thumb's Blues: Love the laid back "smokey" feel to this, especially the ooh's by backing singers, nice "Atmos.gtr". Bry's harmonica set's the tone for Dylananesque. 5/5 2: Simple Twist of Fate. Great love song, well sung, will be great live, sounds like a band having a great time in the studio, production a bit simple, still very good. 4/5 3: Make You Feel My Love. Now, here is what Ferry does best, if only he could come up with a lyric like this himself, it's classic Ferry (too simple perhaps, or no one to inspire it?), beautifully sung and arranged. 5/5 4: The Times They Are A-Changin'. This is a grower, a good ambassador for the album, wasn't too keen when I first heard it, but this should have the crowds on their feet live. 4/5 5: All I Really Wanna Do. This is the first track that sounds a bit throwaway and was probably rehearsed and recorded within an hour. B side fodder. 2/5 6: Knockin' On Heavens Door. This is a lazy, predictable cover, nice harmonica & guitar work, this is one track that could have done with a very different arrangement, perhaps in a Psalm way. 3/5 7: Positively 4th Street. Now I have read the reviews and I believe this is a protest song. Once again this is Bryan, a piano and a lovely arrangement and for me what he does best. This will stay with me for a long time. 5/5 8: If Not For You. Enter Issac Ferry, perhaps to join Roxy in ENO's place?, cute arrangement, sang with too much detachment for me, once again sounds as if it was recorded too quickly and goes nowhere. 3/5 9: Baby Let Me Follow You Down. (not a Dylan song?) So as the middle of the album sags a little, this great little "pop" number sounds like Bryan is playing with the song, having fun and using his voice, just for the hell of it!! 4/5 10: Gates Of Eden. This must be the best lyric on the album, Bryan brings out his best smokey voice for it, backed by a minimal track, it's great to hear "the voice" up close and personal. 5/5 11: All Along The Watchtower. Reminds me of Can't Let Go, build for the live stage, so why not get off stage and let the guitar boy's rip it up Bry!!! 3/5 So that (for me) is Dylanesque, like all Ferry cover albums, not a bad album, a very good one, not as good as TFT, ATGB or the covers on LST or TBSB, 5/5 ALL . Better than TAXI & AT/AP and the covers on FRANTIC, 3/5 for those. The CD sleeve is truly awful, old photo of Ferry, and the spider in the background is a (Bryan) Ferris wheel, intentional, I think not, cheap paper and Paul Morley trying to be, well what?. Unlike Simon Puxleys liner notes on the 1st RM album, which while ambiguous/exciting and tempting, set the tone of the opening bars of Re-Make/Re-Model to the closing Bitter's End. Morley just tries to sound interesting and important, and should go back to his ever self important ZTT stable and write for T shirts. Anyway thats got all that out of my system, now looking forward to the Symphony Hall on Thursday. Best wishes to all, Terry "O" ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2007 18:36:11 +0100 From: Antoine Bianchi Subject: [AVALON] Dylan/iTunes/Cohen/DVD From: "danyellow" > Ferry always says he never met Bob Dylan! > Could it be possible? > the great Bob was in the audience of a Ferry concert in 2000 I was in the audience of a couple of Ferry shows, too, and yet he hasn't met me. So I don't think this video is evidence against his statement (plus videos cannot serve as legal evidence in Europe anyway)! I regretfully have to say Ferry never performed any of my songs at the concerts I attended, though. From: "Guy Lawley" > No Dylanesque on iTunes yet. > > Gotta get that download chart action going on! > > I'm going to write and complain (seriously). Ferry knows better than compressed audio files and no proper artwork (I'm sure he and Ian Anderson *do* like that Zarkowski fellow's work, though exactly why I can't say). He would probably rather have the album released on SACD (hey, at least *I* would buy it). There's the vinyl coming up, but I'm more or less certain that it will be made from the CD master (as most LPs are nowadays). Not sure I need the bigger artworkb& Some webstores are listing the 'regular' release alongside a (slightly more expensive) 'digipack' version. Anyone knows if the digipack has anything special about it (other than being made of cardboard rather than plastic, that is)? Thanks. From: Diane whateley > What I want to know is when our Bry is going to cover > Leonard Cohen-seems to me LC is more Ferry's bag. I > mean what has Dylan got that LC hasn't- apart from the > money? I can just see Bry singing 'Chelsea Hotel'... > The lost loves, world weariness, the artful lyrics, > the depression, the tunes- what say you > Avalonians, all? I think that maybe Cohen's style is too close to Ferry's in some ways. The comparison with the original would be more obvious than with Dylan, as would be the evaluation of Ferry's own lyrics against Cohen's, and he'd probably not feel too confident about that (although I'd personally rate him as the best of the two anyday)b& And I don't think that Cohen's work matches the Dylan canon as a whole; far from it, in fact. It lacks the diversity and occasional simplicity, which brings an urgency to Dylan that few Cohen songs can match (though there are exceptions). You'll find plenty of kinda-Ferry-does-sorta-Cohen filed under 'Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,' though (their recent stuff, at least)b& Regarding the upcoming DVD, I was under the impression from previous posts and articles on the web that it would be a documentary about the recording sessions, not the BBC concert broadcast. Presumably the images that have been shown on another channel recently are from that film as well (haven't seen the one nor the other here in Switzerland). Can anybody confirm what the DVD is going to be about exactly? Thanks! One is a poet whose songs helped spearhead the American civil rights and anti-war movements in the 1960s. The other is a floppy-haired Englishman who fronts the new Marks & Spencer menswear range. But Bryan Ferry last night had the Playhouse in raptures with an entertaining show liberally sprinkled with Bob Dylan covers. Given the Roxy Music frontman's current tour is geared to promote his new solo album, Dylanesque, the set list was hardly unexpected. What was surprising was the way he was able to take legendary tracks such as All Along the Watchtower, famously covered by Jimi Hendrix in 1968, and stamp them with his own unique style. This is, of course, what any good artist should strive to do when covering a song. To make an exact copy is pointless. They must instead reinterpret and repackage the track and try to make it their own. While singing The Times They Are a Changin', Ferry plays the harmonica and there the similarities with the Dylan end. Accompanied by a world-class group of eight musicians and two backing singers, he takes the 1964 protest song and turns it into a glorious wall-of-sound extravaganza. If anything, it sounded almost too polished and professional, with Ferry's clean-cut vocals lacking the soul of the original. To suggest he had improved on Dylan's version would border on the sacrilegious, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The same was true of his renditions of other famous Dylan songs. Ferry isn't the first person to cover Knockin' on Heaven's Door, he won't be the last either, but his interpretation is certainly well worth a listen. What with the works of the legendary folk rocker taking up most of the evening, along with other classic songs like Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Ferry devoted very little time to his own compositions. Although he got behind the piano for When She Walks in the Room, diehard fans would notice the absence of Slave to Love. This was doubly confusing considering T-shirts bearing the slogan were on sale in the foyer. The solo hit which drew the biggest cheers was the brilliant Let's Stick Together (another cover, naturally), during which one of the backing singers proved a more than worthy substitute for Jerry Hall. Later this year, Roxy Music will release their first album for a quarter of a century. This perhaps explains why last night's show was all about Ferry. The Sunderland-born star is nothing if not a great showman and the atmosphere at times resembled that of a stadium concert. While the sweat poured off his head, he was handed a rose from one of the many enthusiastic women in the audience - a sure sign of his enduring status as a sex symbol. But for a show dominated by Dylan, it was interesting that Ferry chose to end it with the words of another great songwriter - John Lennon. Released as a tribute following the former Beatle's death in December 1980, Roxy Music's version of Jealous Guy provided the band with their only No.1 hit. No wonder Ferry enjoys doing covers. __._,_.___ Cheers, Colette __,_._,___ ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2007 08:46:55 -0500 From: "Caledonia Controls Inc."
