It had been billed as Bryan Ferry, singing 'Live' throughout the morning blurbs, but was mimed to the record. Sore throat perhaps ? Bryan did speak briefly, quietly, beforehand about 'always wanting to do a Dylan album' etc etc, but the voice didn't sound right - hence the pretence, I would imagine of the 'live' situation. A lush setting - candlelit, a few of the band there - and it was the excellent 'To Make You Feel My Love' - which is still, from a few weeks back, my favourite track on the Album. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 11:48:09 -0000 From: Subject: RE: [AVALON] John Harding /Butcher Boy Did these songs (which I gather Ferry performed at RFH in the late nineties at a tribute evening) ever appear on any CD release? Its magnificent, isn't it?, that after all this time Ferrys credibility has increased to the point of legend. When I first got into him he was admired but also resented by a lot of critics. And yet there is almost a reverence now about those interviewing him, so keen not to offend, so keen to beef him up. I thought the BBC show was flat on TV, and clearly from jocelyns feedback it was a better atmosphere in the hall, but my mate said to me on Sunday "Did you see Bryan Ferry the other night? My wife saw it and said she really enjoyed it". These are people who aren't REALLY into music if you know what I mean. Encouraging. Every comment on the BBC sessions website Collette pointed us to was glowing. Even reviews saying that this album of Dylan covers suits his voice better than ATGB, and precious little in the way of any "what a waste of time" remarks. So why I am so worried about him these days? Why do I feel he looks like he's half dead on TV? He looked and sounded bored senseless on ITV yesterday. He looked at comfortable as a pair of hedgehog skin Y fronts (outside in) at LSO St Lukes from TV. His singing is not clear cut, yes its lacking power but I actually think he really has sounded more in tune from ATGB onwards. But theres just something about his demeanour now, like he doesn't care too much. Going through the motions. Opposite of Docklands, self belief a bit lacking? Like KBP I'm not certain whether I want him to stagger on or to stop. I think it would be good if he can still write for him to do that for a year or two. Its great that we see him still live on tour at 61, but don't you worry about how tiring that must be for a guy that age? Especially given he's had a pretty hectic touring schedule since ATGB. So has he still got it? Can't wait for Glasgow on Sunday. Really good! Yep. The mix, the slightly desperate-sounding vocal, the focused sound of a very strong band. "There was a spate of Bryan Ferry activity, two days of rehearsal leading up to a concert in a small church that was filmed by the BBC. The choice of songs was fantastic, not too much 80s stuff and some obscure gems from early Roxy albums that I found incredibly beautiful. The gig itself was a bit stressful (it was hard to judge the pitch of the performance), and slightly nervey as we had never attempted a full runthrough prior to being filmed. Some of the songs ran into each other so quickly that I didnt have time to change guitars and missed the intros, which made me livid. Then in the middle of a song Bryan ran off, to the confusion of all. The pianist and sax player started playing a jazz tune and suddenly it felt like I was at some kind of awkward televised wedding. Then he came back and carried on as if nothing had happened. But it was a good taster for the upcoming tour, and I really enjoy the variety of sounds that I get to make, with my guitar running into both an amp and a laptop and Bryan urging me to try something different in nearly every song." So... apologies all round ... was still in rehearsal mode ... bry generous leader ... - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. He has to get some power into the vocal or change the mix. Like he isn't about to stop the dance. This tracks rather understated production on B&G managed to lose one of Ferrys best lyrics. The whole lyric is A1 but..... "Got to keep on movin', or I'll die". Simple and complex and powerful and weak, and sums him up better than any other single line. So let's not have it delivered like he has stopped movin'. Need to see the show in Glasgow before getting too worried though - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Martin Stockman Sent: 27 February 2007 18:16 To: 'Bahi Para'; avalon@smoe.org Subject: RE: [AVALON] LSO on YouTube - Don't Stop Thanks Bahi, i'm starting to think i'm losing it around here... its a fabulous video... the groove is hypnotic - Leo's influence methinks.
