He tends to have sort of a pinched sound, which, like you, I attribute to nerves. It's ironic that someone who's been around as long and has performed live for as long as Ferry would be that nervous. But it happens. I've noticed it with Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, also. What bothers me more than his live voice is his album voice. A concert is a couple of hours that I might get to experience once every few years, but an album is forever. From "As Time Goes By" onward, his voice has sounded thin and breathy on albums. On "Frantic," I just about think you can identify which songs were recorded more recently and which ones he'd had in the can for years, just by the sound of his voice. I wonder how much more his voice will change as he continues to age? - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2007 15:41:00 +0000 From: Subject: [AVALON] voice. I'm not sure if people are frightened to be open about this....it never seems to really be discussed at any great length.. but it has to be dealt with... Bryan Ferry can't sing properly [at least live] anymore. I have made various excuses to friends who have seen him live and onTV - as far back as Jools Holland's new year show - but after last night's performance.....well, I can't. There are lots of things to enjoy.. harmonica, guitars etc.. but the awkwardness of watching him try to croak through even the easiest of songs is just painfull. God knows how bad it will have become if he ever manages to finish a roxy album. I think it's terribly sad AND it makes me unhappy to realise that things are only going to get worse.. I eventually bought tickets for Glasgow and half of me wants to back out in case his voice is terrible again. Willing him to sing better will, like last night, make - what should be enjoyable - become exhausting - - ----------------------------------------- _________________________________________________________________ Find a local pizza place, movie theater, and more.then map the best route! http://maps.live.com/?icid=hmtag1&FORM=MGAC01 ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 19:00:15 -0100 From: "Andy Harrison" Subject: [AVALON] Dylan sessions Set ya timers for next Sat'da channel 4 12.10am ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 20:44:12 -0000 From: "Colette Robertson" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Ferry on the Beeb I have watched the show back a couple of times now and wondered what others thought. I am really impressed with Ollie Thompson ("the bairn should have been tucked up in bed at that time of night!"). Not having seen him on the Roxy tour last year I thought his contribution was great and liked his sound. The editing of the show was poor. No continuity with the order of songs which made it very odd to watch. It's fine for people like us who heard first hand reports from people who attended the recording but wonder how it looked to the casual viewer looking in. One song sees BF and the band looking fresh as a daisy, next song looking tired and drenched in sweat then back to looking okay again. I don't understand why the interview clips were not shown as part of the show as it would help to explain the Dylan tracks. The atmosphere is always lacking in these kinds of "live" shows, especially when the audience have to remain seated. Leo's web diary entry about the night is very interesting and actually helps to explain some of the niggles I had about it that I couldn't quite put my finger on. As others have said it is a great shame that the "rare" tracks were dropped but that's what we expected really. Some of the Dylan tracks are growing on me and I am now looking forward to the forthcoming concerts and hearing the tracks live. Exactly 30 years ago tonight I attended my first Bryan Ferry solo concert at The Edinburgh Playhouse, 25th February 1977. Who would have thought that I would still be making plans to see him in concert in the year 2007. I consider myself to be quite fortunate that I can still listen to Bryan Ferry or Roxy Music and choose to see them play live, warts and all. Id add that his voice sounded painfully tight on In Crowd; I think there is only one conclusion - he was very nervous. The voice improves dramatically through the gig. I also wish he'd have some communication with the audience - I know he's shy and, rightly, thinks all that "Great to be here" crap is uncool. But some odd comments about he new songs would be so welcome, and sell more units than a thousand Richard and Judy interviews. I agree with Reecey now that, along with Tom Thumb, Make You Feel My Love is truly standout. I'm obviously sad that This Island Earth didn't make the Beeb cut but overall the broadcast was a fair representation of the evening. Messing around with the track listing gave it some surreal moments, notably the cuts to audience and the following shot seeing him oscillating between very sweaty and very dry. But I suppose they had to put Slave on early to draw in the TV crowd who'd just been watching a curious programme celebrating the sitcom masterpiece Just Good Friends. Hmmm. With regard to his reading the lyrics... well, not good. Yes these lyrics are possibly the most complex in rock history (with apologies to Peter Hammill)but the transparent peering into the easel throughout many of the songs is a big mistake. I do a bit of amateur dramatics and I was in a Stoppard play a couple of years back, playing a critic watching a show whilst eating a box of Black Magic. I wrote a number of my lines inside the chocolate box and was horrified when I saw the video playback to realize how obvious my crib-sheet looked on film. So... I say throw away the easel or maybe just have a few one word prompts at the beginning of each verse. In 50 gigs I can't recall him drying up, although I've read about one or two moments in this forum. Whatever you think about him he is a pro, but this reading the lines devalues the performance. We need the swagger, and he can't do that peering down at his lines. Hope someone has the nerve to tell him. The guitarists, especially guitar tyro Leo and guitar embryo Oliver, were wonderful. Notably the turns on solos at the end of LST - GREAT - and a new twist to this old perennial. As a role model for my 9 year old son I can think of no better than Ollie with his long asymmetrical red hair and his elegant fretwork. Hope the band gets to wig out more when we get to the real thing in a few days time..... You can here the 'old style' in songs like Manifesto, but Dance Away (which was the 1st Roxy song I was aware of growing up) marks the beginning of what I can only describe as 'limited range'. Gone were the theatricals, and BF's studio voice has remained so ever since. BF's smart enough to choose music that he can do. And he'll do it in his own fantastic way. Frantic was great. In fact it was seeing Bryan singing 'Don't Think Twice..' on Jooles Holland's show which coerced me into buying 10 BF Cds the next day. It was like a mytical realization, BF & Colin Good blew all the other acts away. As Time Goes By is great too. I wish he'd do another 30's LP. But this time leave out this hiss. Another fan was writing about (see Beeb performance) Frank Sinatra& BF having to read the lyrics during concerts. I don't think Ferry is losing his memory, at a concert last year he was fine. Plus Sinatra's voice had a roughness later in his career that I prefer to his earlier 'cleaner' sounding work (The Reprise stuff rather than Capitol). Obviously when he was in his 70's it was all over. Let's hope we've still got a few good year left in Bryan yet. I wish I'd been into Roxy & BF sooner - the music's grown on me & now I'm obsessed. I know that seeing his only ok performance on Friday night was worrying for all of us with tickets. But he did warm up after a couple of songs. Though that wouldn't make sense, as the track order was messed around with, I wasn't there, but I hear that The In Crowd was the 1st song he sung & the 1st to be shown in the broadcast, and that was the worst for his voice. Only the young guitarist saved it. Maybe he needs to warm up in the dressing room.
