["Bermudez" ] Re: [AVALON] Party Doll ["Michiel van Sleen" ] Re: [AVALON] Re: Ferry gigs ["Dick & Petra Verseput" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Ferry on the Beeb I agree with lots of what Chris said. Id add that his voice sounded painfully tight on In Crowd; I think there is only one conclusion - he was very nervous. The voice improves dramatically through the gig. I also wish he'd have some communication with the audience - I know he's shy and, rightly, thinks all that "Great to be here" crap is uncool. But some odd comments about he new songs would be so welcome, and sell more units than a thousand Richard and Judy interviews. I agree with Reecey now that, along with Tom Thumb, Make You Feel My Love is truly standout. I'm obviously sad that This Island Earth didn't make the Beeb cut but overall the broadcast was a fair representation of the evening. Messing around with the track listing gave it some surreal moments, notably the cuts to audience and the following shot seeing him oscillating between very sweaty and very dry. But I suppose they had to put Slave on early to draw in the TV crowd who'd just been watching a curious programme celebrating the sitcom masterpiece Just Good Friends. Hmmm. With regard to his reading the lyrics... well, not good. Yes these lyrics are possibly the most complex in rock history (with apologies to Peter Hammill)but the transparent peering into the easel throughout many of the songs is a big mistake. I do a bit of amateur dramatics and I was in a Stoppard play a couple of years back, playing a critic watching a show whilst eating a box of Black Magic. I wrote a number of my lines inside the chocolate box and was horrified when I saw the video playback to realize how obvious my crib-sheet looked on film. So... I say throw away the easel or maybe just have a few one word prompts at the beginning of each verse. In 50 gigs I can't recall him drying up, although I've read about one or two moments in this forum. Whatever you think about him he is a pro, but this reading the lines devalues the performance. We need the swagger, and he can't do that peering down at his lines. Hope someone has the nerve to tell him. The guitarists, especially guitar tyro Leo and guitar embryo Oliver, were wonderful. Notably the turns on solos at the end of LST - GREAT - and a new twist to this old perennial. As a role model for my 9 year old son I can think of no better than Ollie with his long asymmetrical red hair and his elegant fretwork. Hope the band gets to wig out more when we get to the real thing in a few days time..... I thought he sounded terrible at first, but after a few songs he warmed up & I could exhale again. Was he gonna be able to sustain the evening, nevermind a UK & (partly) European tour! The young guitarist (I presume is) Ian Dixon was great. TGPT hasn't toured with Ferry/RM for a while. Newmark was playing with RM on the last European tour (I saw Rome gig). Anyway, I expect we'll hear a lot more about last night before the day is over. Cheers, Adrian. Triple blast! On top of that, some of the more interesting 'pieces' were edited out including JLY- so not fair! At least I did get a glimpse of the usual cognoscenti- Jocelyn and John O'B...! I agree that Bry took a while to warm up, but I was pleased to hear the 'In crowd' again- I assume that all of the 'pieces' played are on the playlist for the tour- are there any left-field treats in store, I wonder.. Just wish JG would be left out for once..! Now to my query- is anyone planning on treeing a dvd recording of the performance for the list? Pretty please?? Saying Ferry wrote the words so he should remember them doesn't really work. I wrote a note to my milkman last week, and I can't remember what it said. As to Bryan reading off an idiot board - I don't mind at all. Somehow it gives him focus when performing. Mind you, it proves he wears contacts/ or has had laser eye surgery as he used to wear specs for reading. I thought the show was very good. Sad they clipped some of the more interesting stuff while letting the mis-whistling of JG thru. Did anyone notice Nick DeVille (who was sitting at our table) in the audience? At the very least, the show will help with sales of the album and the back catalogue. Job done I think. Actually, Leda and the Swann - she's a queen but the swan's a god in disguise! A Party Doll is a 'play thing', a 'toy' of amusement for the gratification and glorification of the male 'idols' on the party circuit. Sadly, the doll is disposable, eventually becomes a hand-me-down when 'thee man' either grows tired of her or when he sees another party girl he'd like to couch. Never mind the doll has designs, aspirations of glory, she's aiming high riding his coat tails: But she still hurts when tossed aside, no longer the desired object of the party 'king'. Of course a 'prince' will find her entertaining for a while, until... Enter the 'earl', then the 'knights' and so on down she goes, a party girl falling from favor. Oh the emptiness of the thing, much ado about the party scene. It gets you down. Gossip, secrets, lies, fairytales, superficial made-up empty fun. Who cares, it doesn't mean a thing. Incredibly, every now and then, one of 'chosen few' falls for the party doll (or is he only temporarily bored). Oh, No, he's already passed her along by the time he makes this realization. - She's come and gone, still part of the party but with someone else, she was black and blue but the hurt is healing gray. God Ferry wants what is no longer his. He consoles her, tells her not to care what others think, tells her to be light and free again, tells her he knows she still loves him, and he also whispers that he loves her. Seduction extraordinaire. The abuse, the covet, the adultery - all the sin he can take. He wants her flesh, wants to play again. Amen. I think any connotation to drugs is implicit to 'partying' and certainly not the song's theme. Party Doll lyrics only conjure visions of lust, in my mind. Best wishes.
