What Bryan said on his returm was "haha, I threw you in the deep end there," To give the context, BF left the stage during the musical outro of a Spell On You, and we had a good view of him striding purposefully toward a door to the dressing rooms. The band looked mildly bemused then Colin and Ian struck up Someone To Watch Over Me, in pure ATGB tour style. Had non-one said anything it might have been a planned musical interlude. Anyone's guess as to why he felt compelled to take a break. One must assume that he, like the Queen, has natural requirements to relieve himself. The church itself was built in 1711 by Nicholas Hawksmoor HYPERLINK "http://www.venuereservations.co.uk/lsostlukes.htm"http://www.venuereservati ons.co.uk/lsostlukes.htm , the London architect brilliantly imagined by Peter Ackroyd. Having last seen BF in dingy Shepherds Bush, this was a breath of fresh air. Arriving at the back of the competition winners queue, as opposed to the friends of Ferry lads queue (lots of tall, posh 18 year olds smoking,) around quarter past seven, my pal and I ended up in the balcony, peering side-on to the stage. John OB said my perch reminded him of the Muppets box. This appeared to amuse a lot of Avalon faces seated cabaret style around the front of the stage. I must report that Ivor was wearing a rugby shirt. I must also report that, scanning the audience, a lot of Ferrys finest fans had decided to wear sweaters / pullovers to celebrate the latest turn in his gilded career. A lady came on and asked us to applaud and cheer for the sake of the cameras. Then a man came on and gave a fairly uncomfortable and ill-researched introduction to the main event. The band strolled on. My first view of guitar tyro Leo and guitar embryo Oliver. Spedding ambled on in trademark brothel creepers. Backing singers bearing uncanny resemblance to The Shirelles. The opening bars of The In Crowd filled the room, (a brilliant choice for the tour) and a tall 61 year old gentleman strolled on to the stage . - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. The church itself was built in 1711 by Nicholas Hawksmoor And central to the Masonic conspiracy theory behind my other favourite subject, Jack the Ripper - see From Hell the very dark cartoonised Ripperologist bible for further info. But I digress. I do have a penchant for churches putting on 'gigs' or jigs as my lovely octogenarian neighbour used to call them. Cabaret Voltaire in The Crypt in Paddington, Billy McKenzie and Goldfrapp at St Mark's Church in Piccadilly. And St Luke's conversion did make an excellent backdrop. Bizarre that while trying to find the correct entrance for evensong, we could see right through huge gothic arched windows at a bunch of guitarists being bossed by a big bloke in a heavy overcoat and a huge mug of Ovaltine (isn't that what the oldies drink at this time of night?). After what seemed like an eternity freezing on the doorstep we were usurped by a charabang of friends of Auntie Beeb and the Hooray Express to make it by the skin of our teeth into the stalls. Everyone else who waited patiently were debunked to the balcony, not really very democratic, but hey, this is the British Broadcasting Corporation. A bit of strong arming from the butch floor staff who insisted that the cabaret type tables looked more aesthetically pleasing with 4 seats rather than 6, and we were ready for what we imagined would be a workmanlike romp through the Dylan catalogue with perhaps a surprise It Ain't Me Babe thrown in for good measure. How wrong we were. The 'In' Crowd!! The bloomin' 'In' Crowd - not heard since the In Your Mind Tour (anorak check please O'B). The sound balance a bit off and Ferry's vocal a little uncertain at the start but really got into the groove with The Kid putting in a performance that should have him on the road to becoming The Wonder Kid very soon. Then a brilliant rocking Tom Thumb's Blues, proving that the new album really is made to be live. On to a beautifully poignant Make You Feel My Love, a discofied DSTD and SGIYE with drumming as wooden as the carved pews that once made their home here. Then the first lower mandible clanging moment of the evening. This Island Earth. What?!! Never performed live, a real left-field choice and an underground fave of many a hardcore BF fan. Stopped at the beginning for being too slow and explained by F as "We're still in rehearsals" and started again at the right tempo. I really hope this stays in the set for the tour. Followed by a lack lustre P4thS but with interesting guitar treatments from Leo Abrahams using some kind of pen, zither-like on the strings. The resident nitpickers wondered out loud whether it was a Bic or a Parker. BLMFYD with Ferry grinning at the 'baby can I follow you home?' line (what did they put in that Ovaltine?). Then the second miracle of the night. Just Like You. I missed this when it was performed at the RAH as I was out of the country. I'm informed it was nothing compared to tonight's version. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. And Ferry was left in no doubt what we thought of its inclusion in the set. His acknowledgement gives me faith that this may stay in for the tour. Then a bass heavy funky IPASOY working brilliantly before Fez took un unscheduled empty the colostomy break. Suddenly the clock was turned back to the ATGB tour when Ian Dixon's virtuoso spot prompted the mayhem of TTOIA, which for one moment I thought we might get. But no, into STL and a long version of GOE. Then AATWT, fab live and again Ollie taking all the honours. But will someone please get the lad a stylist and strap his little wiggling adolescent groin down, it's very off-putting. As expected a singalong Hard Rain which had the backing songbirds in stitches, followed by a romp through LST. Then we only have ourselves to blame for demanding an encore and getting JG. Ferry whistled away like a referee with his pea missing, while John O'Brien imagined Eric Morecambe in brown coat and cap wandering past the back of the stage filling in Ferry's deserted notes. After the producer announced that there may be some retakes, it was finally announced that Mr Ferry was happy (in other words he'd already buggered off out the back) and off we trotted to the nearest local hostelry. Kevin Rowland headed the same way and was heard to chivvy up his companion at the crossing with 'come on Eileen' . Much positive dissection and coifing took place while we stood around ridiculing eachother's clothes. Well, Martino ridiculed Ivor's M&S styling and we noted Martino's tawdry 80's jeans and suit jacket combo (works on the much older man Martino). But as usual a marvellous evening had by all, and a great harbinger for the forth coming tour. Oh, and I believe it will televised next Friday night. Over and out. The long wait in the cold and drizzle paid off when only the very front of the "competition winners" queue were allocated seats downstairs with the rest being shunted up to the balcony after an extraordinary number of friends and family and BBC guests appeared from nowhere and filed in past us. Not a happy moment and we were really starting to panic a bit. The reason there was one table left at the front so late on became apparent when we realised to our horror that it was right next to the guy with the hand-held camera and I was vaguely aware of it pointing in our direction quite a lot. Oh dear! The obligatory elf and safety instructions and the applause for the cameras were closely followed by the appearance of the band. All familiar faces apart from Mandy on viola and keyboards. There was someone missing, oh, here he comes looking very slim, almost frail, but seemingly on good form and in excellent voice. Black sparkly suit, white shirt and an amazing bracelet. Fairly heavy make up presumably for the High Definition cameras, hair long and becoming more unruly as the evening went on. Someone, who shall remain nameless, suggested he looked like Harry Potter by about the third number. The In Crowd was a great and expected start and the Dylan numbers were excellent live with All Along the Watchtower being the best of them. The audience was a real mixture with a lot of sophisticated fashion type people mixed in with your more ordinary looking punter. A few vaguely familiar faces but I wasn't paying too much attention. The set was short but sweet - particularly Just Like You which was an absolute joy and so much better than at RAH a couple of years ago. Ferry looked over to us at the end and must have seen a table of beaming faces and a "thumbs up" or two. This Island Earth, despite the false start, was the biggest surprise of the night and if they'd only played these two numbers I would have gone home happy. I suppose he had to do Jealous Guy but we could have done without it. Very strange to stay seated throughout a Ferry show - don't think I've ever done that before. An enthusiastic aftershow chat in a local pub and it was still only 10.30. I haven't caught such an early train home in ages. Interesting to note that Just Like You was the only Roxy number (apart from JG) and I wonder what will be added to make up the full set when the tour starts.
