I must say though that "mamouna" struck me as desperately short of ideas. Process perfection perhaps, but different and unexpected? Every review said it wasn't that different from Avalon, B&G, Bete Noire. To us hardened fans it nay sound "two worlds apart" (see how bad Roxy were without FeZ!), but to most its just the same old over polished deeply mixed boring old Bryan. With no killer songs. ATGB on the other hand was unusual, unconventional and unexpected for me. I got into Roxy cos thought Same Old Scene was superb in 1980, and had bnever heard Ferry doing anything new that was like that. An almost "live" album. I thought it worked brilliantly on album, and even better live where the Royal Festival Hall show reminded me exactly why he's the best. The best Ferry/Roxy tour EVER. Anyway all about different opinions and lets hope Dylanesque has the same live presence as the ATGB orchestra. Cheers Rob - -----Original Message----- From: Martin Stockman [mailto:martinstockman@btinternet.com] Sent: 08 February 2007 20:07 To: rob.whiteford@larcltd.co.uk; Avalon@smoe.org Subject: RE: [AVALON] Old interview, new answers Rob says, "Ferry isn't different or unexpected enough to interest most nowadays. Its not that. Its a generation thing, and always will be. My 9 year old boy hears Ferry in the car, says "thats good, who is it?", I tell him, suggest I load it on his pod. No way. How would that play with his mates? Mamouna was different and unexpected, in its own way, and bombed. ATGB was conventional yet charming, and was short-listed for a Grammy. I think its is preposterous to imagine that a new RM album would have a feel of 72-73 Roxy. Staying cool is still the main rule, and these days that means a well cut Saville Row suit, no avante garde musical choices, but, as ever, the quest for aural perfection. That's enough for me. And lets not pretend that the rest of Roxy are pushing the envelope. Manzo ploughs an even more mainstream furrow with Gilmour et al, whilst Eno is producing, er, cough, Coldplay. Next to that Dylanesque is a wildly experimental. - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Thanks Han. Like Simon, I've always wanted to hear this original and have never been able to find it. Ferry must have got his copy on order from Windows in N'cle, they were the only outlet for hard to get imports in those days. As you say, Ferry's is quite a faithful cover, but I love the hints of jazz in the KL version and her voice is just sublime. Like most, I was aware of her via her hit Love Letters, but I think I'll hunt out more of her material now. Now can you get us Ferry singing Strangers in the Night? (It can't be any worse than Send in the Clowns). Oh and how about the King Crimson demo tape while you're at it, try Fripp he may be able to help out. I'm sure it's not beyond you! BF A. Well, there's bands and then there's records. I think the records are all the black artists. And those very sexy videos and dance records. It's the whole genre of very international music - you hear it everywhere. You go to Bangkok and you hear Beyonce....... And then you have groups - these slightly scruffy English people in a guitar band. It seems very polarized to me. Roxy was a failure, really. We tried to embrace the whole black culture that I'd been so moved by - starting with Leadbelly, the blues, whoever, through to Charlie Parker - the whole lot. And really we were white guys in a band. It's funny, we tried to embrace - at least I tried to embrace - the R'n'B ethos, I suppose. Having read that piece just this very morning, I think he's talking more in terms of how they presented the band, rather than in music. And as we know, all that presentation and flamboyancy was a kick against the flared denim brigade, the rock gods who were "keeping it real" (think Paul Rogers, Robert Plant etc - flowing locks and frayed denim, plus the obligatory cucumber). I think Roxy were cucumber-free on stage, although I can't vouch for Eno... ;-) SimonG > Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2007 14:26:41 +0000 > From: "Andrew Shearer" > Subject: RE: [AVALON] Finger finger poppin! > > The ironic thing is that Ferry said in the recent UNCUT interview that he > saw Roxy as an R&B outfit. > > Apologies if I'm wrong , that's from memory.... > > Andrew ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2007 16:23:39 -0000 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: RE: [AVALON] BF at LSO - opening track My book on opening number... 2-1 Hard Rain 3-1 Tom Thumb 5-1 Lets Stick 7-1 Times They Are 7-1 Watchtower 50-1 This Is Tomorrow Takers? - -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
