Having read that piece just this very morning, I think he's talking more in terms of how they presented the band, rather than in music. And as we know, all that presentation and flamboyancy was a kick against the flared denim brigade, the rock gods who were "keeping it real" (think Paul Rogers, Robert Plant etc - flowing locks and frayed denim, plus the obligatory cucumber). I think Roxy were cucumber-free on stage, although I can't vouch for Eno... ;-) SimonG > Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2007 14:26:41 +0000 > From: "Andrew Shearer" > Subject: RE: [AVALON] Finger finger poppin! > > The ironic thing is that Ferry said in the recent UNCUT interview that he > saw Roxy as an R&B outfit. > > Apologies if I'm wrong , that's from memory.... > > Andrew ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2007 13:08:14 -0500 From: jocelynfiske@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Finger finger poppin! Great link Han, even if it did give me the nightmare image of Ferry shuffling stiff-legged and crab-like in a Tina frenzy across stage! Thank God Jagger stole that move in real life and left the grave digger's groove to Mr F. Now our Simon makes a very interesting observation that ATAP had the Stax thang goin' on. I'd never really thought of it in that way, but yes, Fingerpoppin' had the full blown r'n'b/soul 'Revue Show" sound blasting out. But the N'aw Leans thing's in that album big style too and of course the theme du jour - cod reggae in those days, as opposed to the neo-Native Indian rhythms of today. Encouraged to slip the needle in the groove and give ATAP a full spin after many moons, another thing struck me. Practically every track begins with a sparse solitary instrument leading in and it works brilliantly. There is nothing on the new album that makes the hair on your neck (or for the 1% of you left with your original smattering, on your head) stand up like the bass on The 'In' Crowd. And oh for the return of the melotron. And the mad organ intro to Walk a Mile in My Shoes is a revelation. Now that's the sneering vocal that would have worked on Positively 4th Street (similar lyrical themes). Thanks Han and Simon for making me revisit an album left languishing at the back of the play cupboard for far too long. Now Han, have you got the original Ketty Lester version of River of Salt? Had forgotten how to post! So its 10pm and I didn't bother to rush to answer the phone - it won't be for me. It's my brother-in-law looking for me. "Did you know that BF is on the Performance Channel right now?" Phone dropped. Sky plus remote fiddled with and sure enough song is coming to an end and cuts to Ferry interview. My clock says 10:01 and it's fed from the atomic clock radio signal so I'm confident I haven't missed much. I'll post more detail when I check out what has been recorded. Think it's called Bryan Ferry: Profile. Cheers. Obviously recorded around the ATGB release for Granada/Yorkshire/Tyne Tees. Every other interview Ive seen, and Ive seen most of them, has been blood out of a stone, monosyllabic, or exercises in avoiding the question. Interrupting as soon as he's asked a new question with a feeble attempt at answering the last. But hey! The guy couldn't shut him up. His description of the richness of 30s imagery and culture could have been a new lyric. Excellent stuff, best Ferry interview Ive seen, joking, laughing, human, and terrific vocabulary. Bouncing all the way through, HAPPY. Strange days indeed. Best bit was the interviewer's response to Ferry joking that he wished he had a pound for every time someone came up saying they conceived their child to Avalon.................................................. Those of you who remember David Bowie taking Jonathan Ross to pieces will probably quite enjoy Bryan not letting this guy get a word in. Some good video clips too but nothing you won't have seen. Great stuff, I'll record some copies if you want to contact me off list. It is essentially a filmed interview by a guy called Colin Brewer - who also produced the programme. It's from 1999 after the release of ATGB - but, I think, before the tour. I haven't watched it all yet but the clips/videos shown seem to be totally out of place with the flow of conversation. Pretty ropey production. Did I gain any new insight from this? Well no prizes for guessing the answer to that. It seems to have been made for a group of ITV Channels from "oop North" Sky technology performing up to the usual standard appeared to have audio/video ever so slightly out of sync. And if true to form will crap all over the recording before I can ever get round to archiving. (This has happened twice to the Roxy TOTP2 broadcast and I lost ATGB on Artworld too) One interesting comment when asked about "loyal fans from the earliest days" Ferry said something to the effect that there are some about and they are all "tagged" which caused great hilarity with someone off camera - with Ferry and interviewer joining in. I'm sure it'll get rebroadcast - but not a channel that I'm inclined to surf on a regular basis and frankly no great miss. Cheers. Panic over when I realized it was an old program to promote ATGB and I have it on tape. It was previously called "Rock Of The North". That may help jog anyone's memory who might be concerned that they missed a different show it today. I have to say that this must be the best Ferry interview to date as he is so relaxed and happy. I find most of his interviews quite painful to watch at times because he seems to find them so difficult but this one is a great watch.
