I do have a penchant for Mr Zimmerman's lyrics but my God the man's toons are as dreary as they come. I loved F's Hard Rain reworking because of the very nature of it's radicalness (I know it got a lot of Dylan fans' backs up too - an added bonus!) and was looking forward to a venomous Love War like reworking of Positively 4th Street - the cringe-making bitterness of the messages being so similar. But, thank God for small mercies, at least Lay Lady Lay hasn't made the final cut, the very thought of Ferry and a big brass bed has fair put me off my banana elevnsies. And just a thought, but didn't that other sexagenarian who pipped Wor Bry to the post with Pin Ups pay his homage with A Song for Bob Dylan in 1971? Blimey only 26 years behind then. Am, however, very much looking forward to the All Along the Watchtower video where Ferry finally gets to dress like Jimi Hendrix - but can he pull it off? BRYAN FERRY Dylanesque (Virgin) This is London AN EARLY LISTEN TO ... BRYAN FERRY Dylanesque (Virgin) There were two Dylan covers on Bryan Ferry's last solo album, 2002's Frantic, and on 5 March he capably attempts 11 more. Cover versions often signify artistic laziness, but Ferry has made them an important feature of his work away from Roxy Music, and in this case he has rightly compared the task to "an actor tackling Shakespeare". The originals are complex and strong enough to withstand endless reinterpretation. There's nothing too radical here - the vitriolic Positively 4th Street becomes a smouldering piano ballad, while All Along the Watchtower owes as much to Hendrix's famed version as its composer's and The Times They are A-Changin' rocks politely - but Ferry is in fine voice throughout. Recorded in just a week, this is the sound of one of pop's most refined men kicking back and relaxing in the company of a legend. From a vintage issue of the much missed music magazine's diary of the days events: 16:07 Bryan Ferry trots on to the boards, looking as spruce and dapper as ever, and proceeds to wake up a dozing Wembley with his newly formed backing band (which appears to consist of about seven million musicans). A welcome breeze has arrived to take the edge off the mid-afternoon heat and people are actually dancing again...
