For what it's worth, the songbook for Roxy Music Greatest Hits had Words By Bryan Ferry written at the top left and Music By Andy MacKay (or Phil Manzanera) for the co-written songs. The songbooks for Flesh + Blood & Avalon had Words by Bryan Ferry and Music by Bryan Ferry & Andy MacKay (or Manzanera) for the co-written songs. I had a chat with Chris Difford at one time who had been working with Ferry in the 1990s and he had said that he was brought in to help Bryan sort out a lot of the lyrics he had written more to re-structure them and organize them rather than re-write them. This was around about the time of the Alphaville sessions. You will remember form the Roxy Music show at Wembley 2001 when as BF introduced 'Mother Of Pearl' he said " I would like to dedicate this to Simon Puxley who helped me write it" This makes me wonder how many songs Puxley wrote or had a good hand in and was paid an indirect royalty for it and Ferry took the credit for all the lyrics. THIS Culture Club has replaced Roy Hay with Phil Pickett of Sailor (yes, I know he wrote Karma Chameleon and shared publishing royalties with the CC boys) and a relatively unknown newcomer barely out of his teens has taken the place of Boy George... However long the Roxy album and tour might take to materialise, let's all think ourselves lucky that Phil and Andy don't replace Paul with the drummer boy from Bros and stick an unknown in the "role" of Bryan whatsisname. And what about "She Sells" -- Eddie Jobson must have supplied the music for that one. My feeling on the "Cruel" lyrics : working all day in a factory would only seem tragic to folks from the middle class. Ferry is from the working class. You do what you have to do to get by, to feed your family. You don't bemoan it. Also, don't think Ferry would have been likely to take up the topic of Native Americans/buffalo gone or of lonely hearts tearing him apart. I think the only things that tears Ferry apart would be his own romantic tragedies..... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 13:48:00 -0000 From: "S.J.Batie" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Weird Empire the mention of paul thompson reminds me to ask, is there any update on his illness ? s - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Chandla911@aol.com Sent: 22 November 2006 13:24 To: DEAGLERR@aol.com; avalon-digest@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Weird Empire George O'Dowd may be out of rehab but, in what is one of the more ludicrous line-up decisions of all time (though 10cc featuring just Graham Gouldman "and friends" comes close), he's also out of the band. The lyrics on The Bride Stripped Bare originals are outstanding, and Puxley was definitely holed up with him in Montreaux for those sessions. Was Chris Diffords involvement around Alphaville time at Ferry or the record companies request do you know? Virgin cant have been that delighted with the sales of Bete Noire, Taxi, or Mamaouna considering the deal he would have got leaving EG after the number one Boys and Girls album. - -----Original Message----- From: johnobrien001@aol.com [mailto:johnobrien001@aol.com] Sent: 22 November 2006 12:41 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] Co-writing This makes me wonder how many songs Puxley wrote or had a good hand in and was paid an indirect royalty for it and Ferry took the credit for all the lyrics. More recently, word was that Ferry looked closer to home for lyrical help. Unsubstantiated but non the less interesting as it is largely accepted that Ferry is/was/and will be the wordsmith to his own original work. What I find more puzzling is how his musical and literary untutored talents far outstrip his educationally recognised painterly efforts. (NB, I'm not talking about his team work in the design department). Waste of grant money if you ask me. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 12:06:54 -0500 From: johnobrien001@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Co-writing Ferry's co-writing:- Ferry/ Andy MacKay Ferry/ Phil Manzanera Ferry/ Eddie Jobson (She Sells & As The World Turns) Ferry/ Chris Thomas (Rock Of Ages) Ferry/ Rhett Davies (Don't Stop The Dance) Ferry/ Nile Rodgers (Help Me) Ferry/ Pat Leonard (Limbo, Zamba, The Name Of The Game, Bete Noire) Ferry/ Jonny Marr (The Right Stuff) Ferry/ Chester Kamen & Guy Pratt (Seven Deadly Sins) Ferry/ Brian Eno (Wildcat Days, I Thought) Ferry/ Dave Stewart (Cruel, Goddess Of Love, Nobody Loves Me, A Fool for Love, San Simeon) J.O'B. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2006 12:28:24 EST From: Jocelynfiske@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] 90 Degrees in the shade A friend just emailed me to say he saw Ferry wandering down the Promenade at Santa Monica yesterday, clad in trade mark suit in over 90 degree heat. I would even think that the music is also partially Ferry's in many of these cases, at least the vocal line (as opposed to the chord progression etc.). The Dave Stewart collaborations could be quite different from these, however, as we have two 'fully accomplished' songwriters working together then.
