Certainly it seems to be a fatalistic view of things; I've always believed an individual largely controls their perception and experiences in life, while 'macro' tragedy is the culmination of circumstances largely beyond personal control. I concede, however, that some individuals might be 'torn' by 'all the misery they see' regardless of the level at which various tragedies occur. Mr. Ferry doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would acutely 'feel' or care about any other's problems or tragedies. So "Cruel" lyrically doesn't fly for me on the argument that, perhaps, "...for once he's taking a larger world view than the usual lounge lizard/its all me me me persona....", i.e.. "She just a lonely heart--it's tearing me apart", "He just a lonely heart--it's tearing me apart", Nobody knows the trouble I see Nobody cares--nobody but me". Ferry is and always has been 'about me', therefore this lyric strikes me as disingenuous and insincere. Thanks for your response. Seeing the lyric writ down, though, it strikes me that he is talking to God. It's really the only thing that justifies the juxtaposition of the macro and nmicro 'tragedies'. I thought he was talking about 'the white man' in part one and ??who?? in part 2. But if he's talking to God both parts make more sense. And I do like the chorus, I'd have to admit. Overall 'You can Dance' is ten times the song 'Cruel' is, IMO. Tinkety tonk, Guy PS Did I ever get round to saying how horrible I thought Craig Armstrong's 'This Love' was? Extra kudos to Ferry for rescuing the song from him what wrote it. BF's version is ten times the etc. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of KWil632057@aol.com Sent: 17 November 2006 15:04 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Where black is the colour and none is the number In a message dated 17/11/2006 14:39:53 GMT Standard Time, kbporter@verizon.net writes: Perhaps Ferry is making a point, but what do you think his point may be, J? Well, lets think. Maybe he's saying that horrible things happen to people on various levels. He's not comparing national with personal tragedy at all. It's an atypical, "its a tough old world in all sorts of ways" lyric - and for once he's taking a larger world view than the usual lounge lizard/its all me me me persona.... I especially like the idea that the name's he mentions - heroes/ legends to many - don't have the answers either because heroes always disappoint.... J n/p: My sun is set--and my day is done When I turn to the east I can see no dawn But iron horse come--buffalo gone Like blades of grass they cut us all down Yes I know what it is to be free To run as far as the eye can see But long knife come--buffalo gone Like blades of grass they cut us all down Why in the world are you so cruel? Here is a girl who's working in a factory Spends all her time there thinking what she want to be She got no boyfriend--she got no window She just a lonely heart--it's tearing me apart There's a boy now doesn't have a word to say Cat got your tongue now--night to night and day to day He got no girlfriend--he got no money He just a lonely heart--it's tearing me apart Why in the world are you so cruel? Everywhere I go there's a world full of heartbreak Hole in the sky now--tell me where for God's sake Where is that sunshine? Where is that rainbow? Who got an answer here? Tell me what I want to know Nobody knows the trouble I see Nobody cares--nobody but me And James Bond, Jackie O, Johnnie Ray and Garbo Who got an answer here?
