Give me a pitch fork - we'll find out! Seriously, Mr. Ferry does some very good 'covers work'. "Taxi" has been repeatedly bashed by many list contributors but I maintain this album is the best 'covers album' I've ever heard (albeit, the only one I've ever heard by anyone, anywhere)! As far as "I Thought" (an original), it is fairly good but we've no way of knowing how much of the lyric was actually penned by BF - Eno has his 'paws' all over this piece. But "Cruel"?... Rob, How could you be so cruel to dredge this 'embarrassing to the North American psyche' song up as an example of OK lyric writing? The Native American inferences coupled with the 'Indian' war drum beat is an abomination. Ferry should have left this piece in the can - it is clichi, innuendo, offending muddle.... Now take "You Can Dance", there's a nice set of lyric... I've wondered if a condition of the Lucy/Bryan Ferry settlement is the legal suppression of lyrics pertaining to their tumultuous relationship, i.e.. "Love War". Far-flung this idea may be, but great writing often is borne out of turmoil. Turmoil that Ms. Lucy may want banished from the 'public arena' in the form of Ferry lyrics? If so, what remains for Ferry to write about? Augmented with self-proclaimed 'writer's block', we may need to wait a very, very long time for 'original lyrical pieces'. So, does anyone have any tantalizing 'conspiracy theories' to place forward for our skewed imaginations to play with? I like "Cruel" - especially the Alphaville version. "Nobody knows the trouble I see Nobody cares - nobody but me And James Bond, Jackie O, Johnnie Ray and Garbo...." AND it has a good hook line. "Why in the world are you so Cruel?". But we're agreed on You Can Dance - terrific. Dated it may be but theres potential in there. What's a bit worrying is how many lyrics Ferry has written in the last decade. It doesn't mean his future output will be any less great than his previous stuff, but where's he gonna get inspiration for the new Roxy lyrics? Re Lucy, it's a shame that the plane crash and the divorce hasn't inspired anything we've heard yet. But at least he's still around making music! Ferry should have left this > piece in the can > I disagree K, I like CRUEL. but... My problem with Cruel is that it contrasts the 19th century Native American genocide with the "I'm so bored" problems of a factory worker. Perhaps that is the point, but I think mass-murder becomes trivialized next to dating problems. Had the song been about one or the other it would have worked much better for me. It wouldn't surprise me if BF had been playing some records to come up with Ideas for a GROOVE to pin a song on. Since the groove seems based on a "found" Folkways recording of American Indian dance music, it feels to me like a bit of ethnological dumpster diving. I Thought, DOES have Eno's fingerprints on it, It positively reeks of his cut-and-paste methods, but with cuttings of the most banal sort, name-dropping "Streetcar Named Desire" and a bunch of lyrical cliches. Flame within the fire... I recently went to a website to purchase something, and was accosted by said site playing a computerized version of the "Tennessee Waltz" I Thought gives me a similar queasy feeling. I know this makes me a heretic in the temple of the Great God Ferry, but I really dislike "I Thought" Regards, R Deagle ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 07:21:16 +0100 From: "danyellow" Subject: [AVALON] Hard rains ..... tumble all over your shoulder > I know this makes me a heretic in the temple of the Great God Ferry, but I > really dislike "I Thought" > > Regards, R Deagle it sounds like Bryana Jones and the temple of the doom maybe Ferry's record studio is haunted and he simply can'y write anyting new anymore we should all make dreamcatchers made with Roxy Music CDs words of the sha (gus) man ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 03:50:59 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Re: Bryan Ferry Tour Excellent news John - thanks for the update.
