Reading recent posts it would be most interesting to find out what turned you on to RM/BF. What year was it, what were you into at the time etc? For me it was back in '72 - that eponymous debut of Virginia Plain on TOTP - when I was an innocent(?!!!) 19 year old, Bowie was just about to go "Mega", Bolan was King of the Brits, Zep were ruling the world and Lennon was being his usual controversial - if well meaning - self. Dance Halls were becoming Discos, Ska had been popularised by the Skinhead movement and Glam was in it's youth, Roy Wood, apart from embarking on a solo career, seemed hell bent on forming as many bands as possible and Slade were on the way (along with the Osmonds and The Jacksons) to chart domination. I wasn't into anything particular at the time, I enjoyed much that came from Tamla - The Four Tops and Stevie Wonder were two favourites, The Moody Blues were enjoyable but I suppose I was into, mainly, dance or pop music. My Top 10 of the year (not including Roxy or album tracks): David Bowie - Starman Don McLean - American Pie (Full Version) Duncan Browne - Journey Gary Glitter - Rock & Roll (Parts I & II) Hawkwind - Silver Machine Marc Bolan - Metal Guru Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes Paul Simon - Mother & Child Reunion Shag - Loop di Love Wizzard - Ball Park Incident ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2006 11:29:31 +0200 From: "Christian H. I don't think the lyrics are changed at all on Ferry's version. And is far better than Ferry's version! So there. SimonG (I haven't seen the M&S ad with Twiggy, but shame on those for thinking Sailor's Virginia Plain rip-off was Ferry!). > ------------------------------ > > Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 11:15:00 +0100 > From: Stephen Thrower > Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry's career path > > Re: [AVALON] Ferry's career path > > < Love. They seem to choose 70's music for these adverts as previous soundtracks have been "Mr Blue Sky" by ELO and "Make Me Smile (Come up and See Me)" by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. Perhaps they will pick a Roxy or Ferry track one of these days!! As I recall Georg Kajanus was considered to be in the "Bryan Ferry Style" when Sailor were about in the seventies. (Not by me!!) Shag were one of the recently disgraced Jonathan King's creations, not as good as the classic"Johnny Reggae" by The PIglets. You'd know the Duncan Browne track if you heard it...Acoustic riff intro. If I don't count VP my fave track from '72 was the Carpenters "Goodbye To Love", still makes me cry today..... As Everett was seeing Antony Price for a while there are a couple of references to Ferry. I think the funniest is when holidaying in Barbados with Ferry and assorted hangers on, Everett left his dirty socks in the middle of the otherwise immaculate floor of the communal lounge area. Ferry said nothing but Isabella Blow later conveyed a message to Everett, 'Bryan doesn't want you to go anywhere he goes.' Everett said if that was the case he might as well go home and caught the next plane back.
