Yes! Well, I bought my ticket on an impulse two weeks ago, not expecting very much. I was extremely pleasantly surprised. The band were vibrant and the reproductions generally very good. I loved the start with BF sat side stage playing the piano! I thought the backing singers were great and really added to some numbers- like Both ends burning. Leo was great and Oliver (where did he come from?) was also impressive. Niggles? I didn;t like the ridiculous intro to Song for Europe by Colin Good- this isn't the f***ing Liberace show mate! If we want showmanship let's have it from Phil or Andy! Also, looking at Andy while he playing it, I didn't think he appreciated it either! The Bogus man was rushed, which was a shame. I also would have like them to have finished with a Roxy song to send us happily to bed. No programmes was a big disappointment too. The set list overall was good- would have liked to have heard a few more unusual tracks, but I thought it was a good cross section. And playing out to Sultanesque!!! This is one of my favourite Roxy tracks- despite the whole world hating it, I actually like it and it made me smile to hear it. Anyway, I really enjoyed it and I guess I will go next time- hopefully to hear some new tracks. We need to start worrying if the new album proper is signed to Hilton Records. Buy Roxys new album get Reward points. Go to Crowne Plaza - where's the trade? Wouldnt the remix album be best off coming out after the new album ? (or would that delay it a decade?) My spirits about this album are revived after Rock the Dock. I still cannot believe the reviews and even the relative indifference on here to the most vibrant Ferry performance Ive seen in ages. Jocelyn, Reecey you go everywhere what did you think? For a gig I wasn't really looking forward to, after seeing almost the same setlist for so long, a mediocre Dublin but better Cork performance, let's just say this was one I would have missed, had something else came up. After all, no TGPT, and Ms Wilkins long gone too, and no new material. Boy, was I wrong. I don't know what it was, but this was the best Roxy performance I've seen since 2001 - not as good as, but not far off it. It was clear from the first notes of RM/RM, something was cooking. I'm so glad I was there. Great when it just happens like that sometimes. It was an absolute joy to be there. Reecey... . . . . Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! I've recently been introduced to the (now defunct) TV series "Firefly". Am I the only one who sees Dr Simon Tan as a young Ferry? Right down to the haircut and the sartorial elegance? I was caught giggling the other night as the theme song was played, as I imagined Mr. F singing "Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me" with banjos going in the background. Mind you - that's not as bad as everytime I see Alan Tudyk on-screen, I want to start singing "His name is Lancelot, he likes to dance a lot..." from Spamalot. (Tudyk was filling in for Hank Azaria last October, when I saw the show). As for Spamalot - GO! Don't think twice - it's more than alright. Opens in the west end on October 2, I believe. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 01:37:53 +0200 From: "Kari Solberg" Subject: [AVALON] Hotel chain checks in on music scene Do you remember reading this on Bryan's site in March?: "In the build up to the release, Roxy are planning on releasing a remix album, in which various Djs and producers will be putting their own spin on Roxy and Ferry's back catalogue." Could this be the one?: From The Peninsula, Quatar: Hotel chain checks in on music scene Once rock stars would trash hotels to the despair of their owners. But now it is not so much a case of Heartbreak Hotel as one chain is launching its own label, The Times newspaper said yesterday. Malmaison is to create compilation albums and single artist CDs to reflect the "Malmaison experience", the daily reported. And with record company profits on the slide as more music fans turn to downloads and cut-price CDs, recording artists are keen on such tie-ups to keep them in the lifestyle -- and presumably hotels -- to which they have become accustomed. Roxy Music, St Germain, Royksopp and Cassandra Wilson are already signed up to make music for Malmaison, The Times said. The CDs will not just be available on the hotel playlist and at reception. They will also be sold through music store HMV, fashion outlets like Liberty's and the Internet. "We are looking to create an album of remixes of classic Roxy tracks specially for Malmaison," Steven Howard, Roxy Music's manager told the newspaper. "There is a close fit between Avalon-era Roxy (1982) and the chain's cool image. It's great if guests can download the album directly from their rooms. "It connects Roxy with an audience looking for something beyond the latest hit singles." The tie-up follows similar deals between Starbucks and musicians Bob Dylan and Alanis Morissette. Robbie Williams' manager Tim Clark has said artists nowadays had to embrace corporate branding. "Record companies are suffering from squeezed margins," Clark was quoted as saying. "The days when a righteous artist can refuse to sell out are gone. "We are not going to make money from Apple downloads." Danceable, and that sexy Sylvian voice. But, "Fingerpoppin" - drove me up the wall. When I ripped a CD from the vinyl, I conveniently missed that track. Yech. "Walk a mile in my shoes" gets the track-skip treatment quite a bit, too.
