Bospop Hi all, It's been a while, but nevertheless: here some thoughts about my last Roxy concert, Sunday July 9th, at the Bospop Festival. You guys in London tomorrow: enjoy! PRECONCERT - THE FESTIVAL I went to Bospop early, and started the day with a short 45 minute set by Steve Harley and his Cockney Rebel. Which was very amusing to me, most notably because "Love is a Prima Donna" is one of my most treasured vinyl LPs, and Steve Harley kicked of with his vivid interpretation of Here Comes the Sun from this album. It was a nice day, I tried to read through Orson Scott Cards "Lost Boys", a wonderful thriller, I can recommend it to anyone with more than three kids... Then I bumped into a personal old friend, the world is a small place... It was my first love, from way back when, when I was thirteen. We had a crush on each other for 2 years, and didn't even kiss. :-) I mention this, because in those very years I discovered my 'romantic side', that somehow I expect most RM/BF-lovers have. I just think many of us have never kissed their first loves... Joe Jackson was a treat, some many songs from my student days... He filled his slot up to the minute. THE CONCERT - ROXY MUSIC I tried, and succeeded I think, to put away my regrets and negative feelings about how little the setlist has changed in the last 5 years. With the real gem ending, FYP being dropped throughout. And of course, Bospop being a festival the setlist had to be stripped down even further. They were scheduled for 75 minutes, but -my biggest critisism- they barely got to 70. It mustn't be too difficult for Colin to time this to the minute. I would have been thrilled with a (shortened) Bogus Man or Prairie Rose... Or on a more personal note: Beauty Queen or Strictly Confidential... Or... -they are musicians, aren't they?- why not try out some new tune? Unspeakalbe. Or, you might start an oldy with an intro, a theme, that only later we will recognize as a new song... Come on Phil or Andy, you can do that. The band was quick on stage, looking confident. I was struck by the young guitarist. (Nice pic by Reeecey: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7032/2232/1600/5.jpg) From my point, a bit to the right, about third row standing, I couldn't see Colin Good and hardly the two background singers. But so good to see the rest. Starting of with Re-make/Re-model, still wonderful after all these years, but why not re-make or re-model -litterally- a bit more? A strange intro into Pyjamarama that reminded me of Sultanesque, or is this a preview of The New Album, with lots of disco-beat? ;-) A snippet of this at 1'45" on mp3 on www.avl.dds.nl/avalonia.htm or directly: http://www.avl.dds.nl/RM_Bospop_Pyjamarama.mp3 More Than This, since I saw Lost in Translation more tantalizing... Ladytron, as always one of my favorites. Manzo going beserk, in a nice friendly way... While My Heart Is Still Beating, OK. Out Of The Blue, with the amazing Eddie Jobson violin solo on guitar by Leo. Really! My Only Love, ever so gently; *not* gliding into MacKays sax solo. But he opened Both Ends Burning vividly. Then Avalon, Jealous Guy... I revived with a nice intro by Andy Pratt into Editions Of You. There I couldn't help noticing a lovely woman dancing and singing a lot to the right from me... A bit like a 5 year younger, and blonder, version of my wife, wonderful blue lined glasses; and singing the lyrics by heart!! (Any of the Dutchies know her? ;-) Then Strand, Love The Drug, Virginia Plain. All having a great time. And the ending: Let's Stick Together. How deep. So there's gonna be another Roxy album!? But it *was* party time, with long and many guitar solos. A short Roxy chant, and is was over. The enticing Sultanesque droning as a sure sign in the background. And I was too swooned, swept away, enthralled.... ah, the romantic! Only later I regretted not to try and speak to that wonderful young woman to the right of me. I think we met during Werchter 2001 briefly. (Then she must be a math teacher... Don't know much biology...) Perhaps next time is the ... :-)) Tara, Anton.
