Well spotted Ivor! Here's hoping we will be compelled to fork out for remastered versions as good as the Ryko disc David Bowie releases of the early 1990's (what they lacked in sleeve notes, they made up for with unreleased/live tracks and rare artwork). Maybe the BBC sessions might get a look in at last? The bloody 1990's! For gawd's sake have the past 15 years and all their influences both musically and personally not existed at all? Much as I've always said Love War and Alphaville are strong contenders for release, most of us have them, and would sacrifice more polished versions anyday for brand new material that we haven't seen in any number of pre-released guises. Especially since Phil has been writing some interesting stuff lately and Andy's always good for a melody or two, and maybe a bit of post-I Thought scribbling may have gone on with Eno. Who knows? But I want to be shocked by the new release for the right reasons not because it's full of "old" new material and (please God no) Bob Dylan and John Lennon covers. Oh well, whatever gets you through the sesh. If they are intent on just remake/rehashing get the Club-mix album out NOW get Eric Morillo, Joey Negro or Joe Claussell to sort it, sod it just give it to Masters at Work and be done with it, and stick it out while we're all going Ibiza-weather-in-London crazy. Sure fire hit, as Reecey's pub quizz ringer will be forced to atest 10 years from now. Rob, I've never seen the Skinner interview (which I think would be interesting to see) but what you've written about it, Ferry's incoherence and self-doubt, sounds in-line with drug-ravaged behavior. This medicated state would have exacerbated Mr. Ferry's seemingly natural 'shyness'. There is no doubt in my mind that BF has always been obsessed with imagery, and this translates into his own 'carefully cultivated public persona' that he believes is most beneficial to his career. Problem is, from consumer to consumer, art's perception widely varies, as does the perception of one's own 'carefully cultivated public persona': What Bryan Ferry 'thinks' his projection portrays is not universally 'seen' by the public. Hence, unfavorable criticism is taken as an affront. What should be obvious - that one should not be overly self-conscious or abashed by 'what other people think' becomes further lost within the individual whose natural introversion is jerked about by various drug paranoia. (Live and let live. Don't worry, be happy!) Simply put: It is a pity that Mr. Ferry was overtaken by drugs and self-doubt for a period of time. The lasting effects are apparent in his back-catalog. It would be very nice if he were 'freer' to pursue his art. I feel certain I would be pleased with the results. I am not so sure others would be - but that is the nature of the beast. Best wishes. He's made enquiries today and they will be on strike from noon on Friday until late Saturday afternoon. There will be trains but they will probably be severely disrupted. ___________________________________________________________ Tiscali Broadband from 14.99 with free setup! http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/broadband/ ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 10:31:35 -0400 From: jocelynfiske@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Train disruption in London The latest is an offer has been made to the unions. By the way, my estimation for the album sales figures came from Mr Ferry himself. I think it was back at the time of the Roxy reformation (the 1978 one), Bryan was asked (don't quote me, coz i can't remember word for word), - 'was one of the reasons Roxy reformed due to his poor solo sales? He replied that (at that time) in the UK his solo records ( TFT & ATAP) had in fact outsold the Roxy ones (RM thru Siren). I have no idea what the additional sales of the 70's stuff are post 1970's. I don't think UK Gold certification for albums was introduced until 1973? - when I believe it required 150k - shipped to retailers to claim an award. This was later reduced to 100k, possibly at the 1978 introduction of platinum awards for 300k shipped. I believe these award levels have remained unchanged since then. Singles sales awards have changed considerably over the years. Originally: Gold 1M - then: Platinum = 1M Gold = 500k Silver = 250k - then: Platinum = 600k Gold = 400k Silver = 200k The latter to reflect falling singles sales I believe. Biggest selling singles: Dance Away: estimated at 770k (from sales figures supplied to Radio 1 for their 20th anniversary top 100 chart in 1987) Jealous Guy: 500k? - not sure of accurate figure. It was awarded Gold disc for 500k shipped.
