True the Roxy singles tended to fair better sales wise (UK = Roxy 2 Gold & 3 silver; Ferry 1 Silver), but Ferry's first 2 albums each outsold any of the first 5 Roxy albums in the UK; Let's Stick Together (album) went Platinum in Holland & Australia; and most of the poor solo sellers were critically acclaimed (although, I concede maybe not at the time of their release). Into the 80s too. However, there is information available if you know where to look, and have the right contacts. As soon as I saw your post, I called up an old friend of mine who I used to take part in Pop Quizzes years back with, name of Jon Kutner, who is now a best selling author and musophile (he co-writes the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and is working on numerous other Music books, re both Singles and Album sales, and chart positions, in the UK). Indeed, he is the only man I know, who has, in his collection, one copy of every UK chart single (top 75)... ever. Sad but true. I digress. He has, at his fingertips, due to a ridiculous archive of information, which Albums, sales-wise, would be the best sellers in the Roxy/Ferry canon in the early 1970s. It took him less than 3 minutes to tell me (and no, he wouldn't divulge what exact sales figures he has, as he'd get hung !). Let's just say he has a lot, lot, lot of information, and some that perhaps he shouldn't. Authors do. He confirmed to me the following : If a 'chart' were to be made, say, of Roxy and Ferry Albums 1972-75, it would turn out like this, sales-wise : 1) Stranded 2) Siren 3) These Foolish Things 4) Country Life 5) For Your Pleasure 6) Another Time, Another Place 7) Roxy Music Stranded, he said, was streets ahead. Not surprising, being Roxy's first No.1 Album, at that time of year too. And, the reasons Siren ended up ahead of TFT, despite being in the Album chart for much less time, were five-fold : 1) TFT stayed in the charts a lot longer than Siren, but began in the midst of one of the poorest times for record sales, catching midsummer. 2) Siren had the Xmas sales - which makes a massive difference. 3) Siren spawned Roxy's biggest Hit Single to date to coincide - Love Is The Drug (which increased the Album Sales) and remember, the single was only kept off the No. 1 position by some hapless spacy re-release by some twerp called David Bowie. 4) Roxy toured extensively to support the Album 5) Ferry did not tour extensively to support TFT. Similarly, Country Life ended up higher here than one would expect if you look at weeks in chart and chart positions alone. However, they had a strong autumn Tour (pre Xmas) which, again, apparently made the difference. So, I'll stick with the info from the archivist. As for the discussion re Gold / Platinum / Silver Albums etc, this has changed rapidly over the years, and means little now, due to the general fall in record sales, years ago. I think you only got a Platinum, many years back, if you reached the magical million, was it ? Then, they brought it down to something like 500,000. Isn't it 300,000 now ? Not sure. Times have changed. And no, it wasn't me Guv, I mean, just because I worked in a chart return shop back in the late 80s had nothing to do with the fact that the Price Of Love (Remix) ended up at No. 69 when it shouldn't have made even the Top 100 that week, no officer, you've got the wrong man, I deny everything, I never did nuffin'. My number one is the cover of "The Ultimate Collection". Aside, I'd have thought the 'tirade' would have been funnier had the "Frantic" album cover been used instead of "Boys and Girls" - our 'jealous marker artiste' might have done a noose and aqua-lung fitting. And BTW, Rob, Martin; You and I are of a minority regarding RM vs. solo Ferry. Nothing like going against popular opinion to agitate the crowd, uh?! Be very afraid. Yes indeedy Kay. The "Not In" Crowd. The "Out" Crowd even! Did he lose confidence and think that he would have held back the music because of his image? around the boys and girls time (that picture of him is on the back with some boring nonsense on the front) he said in an interview with Richard Skinner that after the BSB flopped he felt that peoples perception of him might be the problem. And Bete Noire was abstract to say the least (I mean lacking in imapct cover art wise - that Limbo thing Michael Roberts did would have been a much better idea - black on white with red. Maybe a leopard and some incense..............) And then Taxi - could you tell that cover apart from Bete Noire in the half-light? Almost as if he felt his name, his image, would cause it not to sell. Which is rubbish of course. Same Old lack of self belief, such a crying shame considering the brilliance of which he is capable. Oh and I always admire Ferry for refusing to talk about drink & drugs publically, but those who have seen that interview with Skinner, (I still have a copy on video tape), must know that he is totally unable to string a sentence together in it. For example when asked whether he would tour B&G the response was incomprehensible and even he just sniggered at the end of his waffle, and lit another fag. Still well cool though! Who recalls this?
