There are quite a few players from our premier league playing at the world cup who never get a mention when the role call of French guys playing for Arsenal etc is mentioned endlessly. Bryan is such a thief of images ... sorry, that should read a re-maker re-modeler of iconic images in his videos. Recently I have come across two moments from Bry's videos that have been lifted, albeit lovingly, frame by frame from the cinema reels. 1) La Dolce Vita. When Anita Ekberg hits the tarmac on the airport runway she is engulfed by cameramen sporting flashbulbs, who arrive on a truck. Check the Slave To Love video where the exact frames are reproduced to greet La Ferrari's dismount from his jet 2) Touch Of Evil. Orson Welles' masterpiece was being projected at Stockman Towers the other night. Three quarters of the way in a woman is framed against some torn posters in a dark back street. Bingo! Exactly the same as Ferry / the lady in the leapard-skin coat in "Limbo". Same lighting, same shadows, same attitude, same same same. Both marvelous, visually beautiful, stylish films, of course, beloved of auteurs and film students everywhere. I quite enjoyed the Mamouna video. It marries elements of the Island of Dr Moreau (pick a version - although probably best to avoid the silly Brando adaptation) with Arthur Joffi's little seen film 1985 film "Harem." I probably don't have to point out the obvious Rudolph Valentino reference (Son of the Sheik to be exact) but I have just in case. Fascinating to note that Valentino also seemingly supplied inspiration for the much derided gaucho look: _http://212.84.179.117/i/Rudolph%20Valentino.jpg_ (http://212.84.179.117/i/Rudolph%20Valentino.jpg) As the solitary comment on this video on youtube states: "Excellent later Bryan Ferry." I tend to agree. Two world premieres The Airman (absolutely brilliant!) and August 1914 (less so) were aired, together with 1/2 and 2/2 from Music For Airports, as well as music from the 16th Century (Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and John Dowland), "modern" compositions (from Arvo Part, Somei Satoh and James MacMillan and a 1930 doowop Gospel song in the Paul Robeson tradition) and very little inbetween. The quality of music and artistry was incredible. Yes, there was the old Eno magic (sending vocal quartets to various places in the Abbey armed with synchronised CD player portables with non-synchronised CDs to serve as their cues) which will have some pointing childlike at the Emperor and declaring him naked (although this was in fact my 10-year-old son's favourite bit), but Eno is best appreciated as a collaborator and his partnership with all those involved was breath-taking. He did suggest that Music For Airports has never been performed live, not even when recorded as it relied on tape loops and synthesisers. But surely this forgets the concerts by Bang On A Drum, the Royal Festival Hall one of which Brian Eno attended as guest of honour. But no matter, he doubtless meant by himself. Peter Gabriel made the short journey from RealWorld to be present but, like Roddy Frame, he is small fry in the music world that includes giants like Bryan Ferry and Franz Ferdinand, but it is highly likely PG was inspired. The concert programme notes were by Joanna herself, Brian Eno (the original liner notes for MFA) and Michael Bracewell who wrote the following, better than which I would be hard pushed to compose. So I shan't try but will instead painstakingly reproduce this one paragraph. "Eno's role as a co-founder of the art rock group Roxy Music in 1971 can still be regarded as one of the most accomplished debuts in the history of pop. By colliding a highly-stylised selection of popular music forms - from French chanson to surfer rockabilly by way of Johnny Ray - with an uncompromising backdrop of atonal electronically massaged atmospherics, Roxy Music were and remain the most eloquent and spectacular testimony to Eno's definition of pop. This meticulous crafting of songs has always run parallel to Eno's instrumental recordings - the artistic starting points of which are related to notions of time as much as instrumentation. Hence his creation of 'Ambient' music - first using the term in 1978 - would provide the cultural lexicon with one of its principal epoch-defining concepts." This is but 20% of the biog notes, all equally gushing but nonetheless, all just about right. And you can't say fairer than that...
