"Someone gave me the last Brian Eno album, Another Day On Earth. I love Eno. The term "genius" is overused but I think he genuinely is. Think about all those Bowie albums. Roxy Music. Talking Heads. Another Green World. This album is lovely. It's him getting back to songs a bit, but my favourite thing is the fact that there's a guy on it called Barry Andrews who has a credit for "splutters". Only Eno would do that!" Actually I am not sure about that last sentence, but otherwise you know he's right. Am listening to As Time Goes By just now as I write to you out on the verandah, looking out over the Mediterranean from my mother's home in Cyprus, and it's beautiful. It's very fitting for the mellow mood of the day and it's gentle on the ear. I just love Ferry's cover versions, more I think than his own material. These Foolish Things was an absolute out-and-out classic and miles better conceived and curated than Bowie's Pin-Ups, much of which I love also. But ATGB hasn't really "influenced" artists. Rod did American Songbook (1-96) as a last-gasp attempt to find an endlessly repeatable pensionable activity once he'd reached 60, while Ferry has now moved on. Rod should follow suit. But ATGB is not something that can be argued to have originally influenced people. It's revisionist at best and, in many ways, it's Colin Good's album but with a great and stylish vocalist as frontman. And if ATGB actually HAS influenced anyone, these people should be taken out and shot for not having been influenced by George Gershwin, Noel Coward, Fred Astaire, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter et al in the first instance. Admit it, it'd be great if Ferry did something truly GREAT as well as stylish, and SOON. Playing with other Roxy stalwarts in an open-air Docklands arena as part of a motor car promotion and then at the Isle of Wight Festival doesn't strike me as the way to go about this aim, especially as the new album won't have been released by then (if ever). And with Henley Regatta hoorays forking out 750 quid a ticket to see him solo, the incentive to do something different isn't really there. Is it? Do those Avalonians that went, and I am sure there are some, feel embarassed to admit it? Did it actually happen? I don't mind him supporting the Countryside Alliance. I care nothing for foxhunting but I respect the right of minorities, rich and poor, to be able to carry on with their traditions that the majority may not care for. I 'll not ask who is going to Henley. Ok, I did. Roddy Frame eh? One of the true giants. "Someone gave me the last Brian Eno album, Another Day On Earth. I love Eno. The term "genius" is overused but I think he genuinely is. Think about all those Bowie albums. Roxy Music. Talking Heads. Another Green World. This album is lovely. Outrageous old Eno eh? I bet he's the life and soul of any party...No, actually, Ferry is still top of my wish list for my next soiree. Actually I am not sure about that last sentence, but otherwise you know he's right. Not really. Otis Ferry had a credit on Cruel as "Whip." Surely that's equally as eccentric? Am listening to As Time Goes By just now as I write to you out on the verandah, looking out over the Mediterranean from my mother's home in Cyprus, and it's beautiful. These Foolish Things was an absolute out-and-out classic and miles better conceived and curated than Bowie's Pin-Ups, much of which I love also. How I envy you! Listening to ATGB in the Med. I hope your cravat is straight! But ATGB hasn't really "influenced" artists. Why? Why can't a cover version influence somebody without fear of Roddy Frame (nee Richard Williams) turning up brandishing his Uzi? Admit it, it'd be great if Ferry did something truly GREAT as well as stylish, and SOON. Of course it would be. You won't have to force a confession out of me for that one! I agree with Mighty Martin though, we have had some great and highly creative Ferry compositions over the years. Playing with other Roxy stalwarts in an open-air Docklands arena as part of a motor car promotion and then at the Isle of Wight Festival doesn't strike me as the way to go about this aim, especially as the new album won't have been released by then (if ever). Possibly not but without the initial reunion tour there would be no hope of a new lp whatsoever. Besides, why do you begrudge Ferry and co the right to make a living? He doesn't demand you do something more creative than bang on about Brian Eno all the time does he? And with Henley Regatta hoorays forking out 750 quid a ticket to see him solo, the incentive to do something different isn't really there. Is it? So what? I am very pleased to see that he is such a popular artist. New material will come but Ferry has always made us play the waiting game. I notice they didn't hire Brian Eno.... Enjoy the sunshine, Jonathan n/p In Your Mind by Bryan Ferry - At maximum volume. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V11 #121 ***************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
