I think I can help. It's that word 'cool'. There is nothing 'cool' about Anthony & The Johnsons. The songs are nakedly emotional, unpretentious, and the singer does not attempt to adopt anything approaching a 'cool' demeanour. If people think it's 'cool' to like them, that's another matter, one that it would be a shame to confuse with the music, which is simple, direct, and totally honest. Sometimes when a thing become 'flavour of the month' it's easy for the media 'buzz' to get in the way of what's actually there. I couldn't watch The Office at first because too many people were telling me how great it was. When the fuss died down a bit, I watched the repeats, and loved it. Keeping in mind that my musical efficiencies are imaginably inefficient, I rather like Stranded. With an inept adeptness, I easily understand why Messieurs Ferry and Eno might cite the Stranded album as Roxy's best. From album jacket to song placement, the work has esthetic appeal. - A biting Street Life gushes forth, calmed and moderated by an introspective Just Like You, chased with the sleek, slight funk of exotic hope that is 'very tempting to replay/repeat' Amazona. Psalm has redemption in the form of stylized voice but the Elvis wanna-be just ain't regal enough (The original is still the greatest!), and if the piece was meant to sooth, it surely snoozes a powerful groan within. Solemn delivers us into the fading evening as Serenade casts a melancholy darkening until the spiritual transport of A Song For Europe arrives. Mother Of Pearl infuses a converse between unconscious streams of consciousness whereby love, lust, and various proclivities collide (get the picture? No... - (Yes)). How else to end but with a final Sunset and goodbye. This album does have a life of its own! More over, the lyrics are just superb. Economic. Colorful. Provocative. Emotional... Best wishes. KBP PS - Richard, glad to read you are in better health. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 08:13:16 -0800 (PST) From: Johnny Reece Subject: Re: [AVALON] 1001 albums you must hear before you die That's an interesting one, I knew Eno rated 'Stranded', although to my knowledge Ferry himself has always cited 'For Your Pleasure' as his favourite, for a host of reasons (not least the fact that 'Beauty Queen' seems to be his favourite track). Way back in 1996, he chatted quite happily about FYP and the making of it, on that momentous day (ermm, just for me I mean) when Dave Stewart, then a neighbour, dragged Bryan in to my record shop (Bryan was across the road, recording, at the time). He happily signed a load of Album Covers for me, but stopped half way through to ask me why there was 2 separate FYP's to sign. 'One for here, and one for home, to hang up' was my answer, 'as it's my fave Roxy Album'. 'Mine too', said the man, and chatted at length about exactly why. He mentioned the whole feel of it, everything 'being exactly right for the time, the image, the clothes, the cover, the music' all fitting the feel of early 1973 exactly, perfectly. A brief chat about being somewhere in the countryside outside Derby (I think) trying to write songs all through the night as he was worried it wouldn't reach the record company in a finished state, in time. I mentioned BQ and GL as my fave tracks on the Album, and he mentioned that BQ was the one that stood out for him, though added it was so difficult to do it justice in a 'live' setting. That might explain why it hasn't been performed 'live' since approx about 1974, though my memory may be playing tricks on me with that. Would love to hear it done now though - it's the Holy Grail for so many of us, that one. Rose-tinted memories aside, I got to thinking if it was actually possible to list 1001 Albums, for personal recommendation. I don't think I could think of that number to recommend, though could think of a few hundred (don't worry, I certainly won't try and do it here !!!). But I'm sure all of us have a good amount we could name straight off without even having to think about it. Reecey... . . . . - --------------------------------- Yahoo! A live version of BQ is the Holy Grail for many of us. I have often wondered if he would ever consider doing a "stripped down" piano version of this song? I know that I yearn for the original version live but accept that it is "difficult to do it justice in a 'live' setting.", especially the vocals. With this in mind I would be interested to see if he could re-work the track as he did with The Only Face. I learned to appreciate that song more after hearing it so many times over the past couple of years. Of course the original version is so unique part of me thinks that it could not be tampered with BUT the other part of is quite curious!! Well, I like him lots (Antony that is), but never heard any Ferry, but different ears hear different things. It is just personal opinion, so nothing to get het up about, who really cares if some people don't like Antony, and some do. Most of you would not have known about him if he hadn't been hyped up in the media. That aside, he has got an amazing voice, and is really a fantastic entertainer.
